I am buidling a PC from scratch. When I start it, it sails through until it gives the statement DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

When I do this, nothing happens.

Did I install the hard drive incorrectly?

You would get that error message if you try to boot from a hard drive that has not been partitioned. If that is the case, you need to use the FDISK program on your hard drive and set an active partition.

Press F1 or Delete to enter the BIOS. Check to see that your start options are set to Floppy and hard disk 1. If not, set them up in that order.

Let me get this straight you built a PC from scratch and don't know what to do here. Damn anyone can build PC's these days, It's guys like you who get guys like me bad reps. I'll tell you how to solve it on one condition you don't charge the gezzer your building this for and if it's for your self, well then OK.

Right go into bios and check the drive has actually been picked up by your motherboard. If it hasn't check your cable setups and your jumpers.

Assuming you have now passed that stage go into bios and change your initial boot drive to CDROM. Put the cdrom in the drive boot the win98 cdrom run Fdisk and assign your self a partition. Format and hey presto your ready to setup.

If you could'nt get passed the CDROM part cuz you never had one, or you don't have 98 or M/B does'nt suppor the oprion. Choose your boot device as A: insert a boot disk and run FDisk etc.

Regards

I just got a DISK BOOT FAILURE on my NT system when I moved my 2 CD Drives externally. When I remove the external connection (disconnect the scsi cable running to the back of the computer) the computer boots fine. If I hook anything up externally I get a DISK BOOT FAILURE. As I say, removing the external hookup allows the system to boot normally and the drive is absolutely fine...

I´m from Germany, and I have the same problem
with 'disk boot failure'.

Drive C: Windows 95
C:\loadlin: Linux

It happend, when I installed the bootmanager 'system commander'. uring the installation, it stopped. After that Irebooted and I first got this message 'mbrf'.

After that I installed 'system commander' successfully, but when i tried to reboot I got the message 'mbrf` again. Even when I
recopied the saved mbr.

After that I saved all files in C:, formatted C: and installed MS-DOS 6.22. Even now I got the message 'mbrf'. it's possible to boot from a:

PS.: 1. the bios shows this hard disk.
2. I can use dir, copy and other commands on C:
3. I can boot LINUX from C:\LOADLIN
4. I can boot from a:\.

It seems: the problem is in the master boot record (mbr).
But what can I do to repair it?. I dont't know, because I´d written the saved mbr back (see above), and with this the problem should have been solved, but it isn't.

Who can help me and solve my problem? Please send me an email: hans.gruner@mail.uni-oldenburg.de
