I am trying to run hard drive (30GB)defragment. But after the process has gone throgh 3 to 4%, it goes back to 0 and restarts. It restarts again and again even I have left it for 2 hours. I have run disk cleanup and disabled screen saver before I run disk defragmenting. Please advise how can I get it run smoothly.

Give "Diskeeper" a go and see if your problem disapears
On the Other hand "Safe Mode" is the best place to Run a defrag
Bonne Courage ..

OK. It runs in safe mode without problem. As for Win ME Defrag, I will try some other time since this requires downloading the program. Thank you all!
Hernyhauw

Although using Safe Mode is an option it should be possible to run defrag in normal mode.
The trick is to find out what is getting in the way. Screen savers and SpyBot resident can mess it up.
If you type msconfig in the Run box you could "temporarily" untick anything in Startup except ScanRegistry. The idea is to find which program is the culprit.
Having done that it may be possible to use the interfering program some other way, such as starting it from a shortcut to the .exe when you need it, or somehow disabling it when you are running Defrag.
Window ME defrag is a hoot (way faster) but it won't cure the reported problem.

It is quite possible to run defrag from normal mode.Just turn off programs that might interfere with the process.Do not run any program other than the defrag, turn off the antivirus or any other spyware buster temporarily, turn off the scheduler, disable the screensaver.....meaning to say that no other program should run except the defragmentor.Thats it.

I disabled anti virus and spyware blaster, with no other program running, but I still could not run disk defrag. I manage to run defragment when I unchecked all except scan registry in the start up menu, as Derek has advised. Many thanks.
Henryhauw

Fine, then you now put the ticks back one at a time until you find which program hangs up defrag.
When you find it we might be able to suggest some way forward which maintains satisfactory access to the interefering program without defrag being interrupted by it.
DerekW

I have found the culprit. It's the msnmsgr on the start up list. Disk defrag works ok in normal mode when this one is unchecked. I can leave it unchecked since I don't use it often. Many thanks.
Henryhauw

Aha, another culprit to add to my list.
I don't know much about msnmsgr but if it has an .exe file (msconfig should show it in the path detail) then you could always make a shortcut to it on your quick launch bar next to the Start button, or on the desktop.
That way you can start it when required but it won't start on boot. Quick launch items don't run on startup or in the background.
DerekW

One does sometimes awunderrrr why M$ insists on pre-installing and/or pre-automating (if that's a bona fide term...) so many "items (utils?)" that many folks don't use; or if they do use them ther's no option to not automate its service(s) at the outset?

Yeah trvlr, and it doesn't stop at MS either. If I'd have let every program have its way I would have had icons all the way along the bottom of the screen and Start/Programs would have been yards long.
DerekW

It's in the Program Folder. After having unchecked this in the startup menu and removed from the system tray successfully, I opened it from the Program Folder for a try. The program opened as normal. But it's icon returned to the system tray and I need to repeat the process : go to msconfig, starup, uncheck this item, and restart the machine to remove it from startup! (This is similar to some kind of adware that I ever have encountered!)
Henryhauw

There are some utilities with the help of which you can remove programs like these from the startup list so that they won't start again. You are using win98,so you can user regcleaner for that.you can also use winpatrol.
Anupam

Sure, when you opened it from Program Files the icon came back into the system tray. Did you then try a reboot? Sometimes you have to live with the icon until the machine is restarted.
Otherwise (apart from the possibility of some third party program as suggested) did you have a good look in the tray icon to make sure there is no built in method to not show the tray icon. A bit hopeful but sometimes something is provided.
DerekW

Did a little Googling and found this:
=============================================
If you do not want MSN Messenger to start in your System Tray every time Windows boots up, do as follows : go into the “Tools \ Options \ Preferences” menu option within Messenger and uncheck “Run when Windows starts”.
=============================================I don't know what happens if you then double click the file in Program Files. Try reboot as before to see if tray icon returns.
DerekW

I have discovered by just unchecking the program from the startup list, the msgr icon returns to the tray immediately when I open this program from the program menu and the item at the startup menu is re-selected automatically even I had re-started the pc after unchecking.
But your second suggestion works. Although the icon returns to the tray when I open the program from the program list, it is left un-checked on the startup list. The icon is not placed on the tray unless I start the program again. Thanks.Henryhauw

Fiddly, but it sounds as if you have worked out your own way around it. Not much more I can add, that's life with computers I guess.
Thx for taking the trouble to come back and let us know how it shook out. Hope your compromise solution to this problem meets your needs reasonably well.
If I've managed to help a little along the way then that's good.
