Speed it up? They brag of 400k downloads, what are you getting? The one thing I do know about Direct PC is that the dish alignment is very very sensative pluss if the dish is not mounted extreamly secure a very light breeze can move it enough to mess up the signal.

You can't tweak to speed it up. The people that control DirectPC control the speed.
Usually you only get 400k downloads at slow times. If someone is trying to download and he pays more then you then he will get the 400k download and you will be down graded to a slower speed. I personally think DirecPC is a $%#king rip-off........

If you have DSL or cable available in your area, then DirePC is sh**. However, if you live 30 miles out in the country, as I do, without any cable and your local phone company has a devotional section on their web page (mine does) and your neighbors think DSL means dirty stinking laundry, then you'll understand just how wonderful DirePC can be.

But as for the question, no you can't tweak DirecPC. As for the 400k, it's no different than cable/DSL. During peak times, hardly anyone gets ultra high speed. I had DSL when I lived in California and during peak times it was slow. Same with cable. I don't think it's fair to criticize DirecPC for not having 400k during peak periods.

Preston, with direcPC it really has nothing to do with peak hours. It actually has to do with how much you are willing to pay with direcPC. IF you pay more you will always get the 400k no matter what but if you pay less, you are hosed.....

Go to www.dslreports.com click on their tool section and go to the one that talks about tweaks. It is a java applet which will asses your window settings (MTU and RWin) to determine if they are set correctly.

works pretty well. I used it on my DSL connection and it discovered two problems, once the change was made, I went from getting 300-400K down/110K up to 600 - 710K down/136K up. However, during peak times it varied but never dropped below 400K after the changes.

Fox

I have the AOL Plus Powered by DirecPC running on Windows 2000 Pro. I always hit anywhere between 830Kbps to 1100Kbps. In windows 2000 you wnat to make sure you don't set you RWIN higher than 64KB. You also want to make sure your resources are 80%free or higher. and anything above 256MB of RAM will help get these types of speeds. My PC has Dual Xeon 450Mhz with 512MB SDRAM. I have tried numerous machines and the memory and the RWIN setting help the most. DSLReports.com has good literature on tweaking.
