Hi all,
Here's my problem. I just did a clean install of WinME and now for my dial-up connection, the "Save password" option is greyed out. To try fixing it, I deleted all of the PWL files in C:\Windows and rebooted, but a logon as user screen never showed up. Now, there are no PWL files in C:\Windows (even after rebooting). Next, I checked my Network control panel and Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP are all installed. I uninstalled and reinstalled them all to see if it would fix it, but it didn't. I've even tried different things in the Passwords and Users control panel options, but nothing worked.
In the Start menu when I boot up, it just says "Log Off..." If I select this and push Yes to "Are you sure?", the box does come up where I can put in a user name and password. After doing this, in the Start menu, it changes from "Log Off..." to "Log Off Steve..." and now I can save my password for Dial-up Networking, but if I reboot the computer, it goes back to the plain "Log Off..." and again I can't save the password. Every time I boot up or restart, have to manually switch to Steve. I've even tried TweakUI's Logon tab to automatically boot up as Steve, but it's always "Log Off...".
Does anyone know how I can make it so I have one user at start up and that user can save the Dial-up Networking password? Thanks.
Steve

Hi...go into Control Panel, open up the Network applet. Under Primary Network Login, change it to Client for Microsoft Networks. See if that helps.

May have to add Microsoft Family Logon to the Primary Network Logon line. Once you get the Save Passwork box ticked you should be able to return to Client For Microsoft.
By "Loggin on" Steve you are assigning a hardware profile that you can bring up by using that user name. This would be useful in the event you had too many hardware items to be able to assign each one an acceptable IRQ. Use Logon profiles to Disable hardware in a given user name in order to activate a different piece of hardware as substitute.
The reason the default Log Off.. is blank is because you did not "name" your computer. There is no need for a name here. I use a generic term as it is used for Cookies when on the 'net.

Make sure you have the following in the network section.
A client, Client for Microsoft or Microsoft family logon, your choice.
Dial-up adaptor
TCP/IP
If you have these installed and are still having a problem you might try the following. Start, log off or start, shut down, log on as a differnt user. After the computer restarts check to see if the password box is still grayed out. If it is not then the autologon in the registry is enabled. You then need to go the www.microsoft.com to the knowlage base and search for how to edit the registry and remove the autologon. Before you do any registry editing, BACKUP the registry.
