dialup overrides broadband connec

After installing a NetZero free dial-up account as a back-up to my broadband cable internet account I am unable to go online with my broadband account. I get the familiar "cannot find DNS" error in IE(6).
It appears as if the dial-up adapter takes priority over my nic card for accessing the internet.I can fix this by deleting the dial-up networking components in control panel/network and then restoring my registry to the previous day's settings.
How can I choose to use my cable modem connection for surfing when having a dial-up connection installed at the same time?

I don't have NetZero, but have you selected "never dial a connection" in Internet Properties?

Yes. "Never dial a connection" is checked in Internet Options/Connection yet I am still unable to go online via my nic card/cable modem config.

Sounds like you overroad your LAN settings when you setup the dialup modem connection. Go back and rerun the Internet Connection Wizard and reestablish your cable modem connection.

I've rerun the Internet Connection Wizard to reestablish my cable modem connection but I'm still getting the same "cannot find DNS" error while trying to surf.
Shouldn't I be able to have a dial-up networking connection and a cable modem connection installed at the same time?
