If I print ANYTHING from ANY program while dialed into the Internet, my dial-up connection locks up and I have to disconnect and reconnect. When I do this, it takes a long time for it to recognize the disconnect request as well.
Running Win98, NEC SuperScript 870 Laser printer, 400mhz Pentium II, Rockwell HCF 56K Speakerphone PCI Mode internal modem, just upgraded from 96MB RAM to 192MB RAM. Someone thought it was a memory issue so I upgraded the memory. No change - HELP!

Simple stop trying to print when online.. Save Web Pages to file, and print later.
Do not know why it does this. My setup freezes if I try to open a Web Based Text File. Funny World Computing.

That's how I handle it now, but it also means I can't print from Word, Excel, Calypso, etc. and it also means I have to save graphic files, etc if I want to print a page in it's entirety (which I often do to archive my work).
Really hoping for a place to look for a better solution!

most likly you have what is called a irq conflict
if either the printer or the computer are still under warrenty then call manufacture
if not then open note pad and paste just what you want there and then disconnect from the net and then print

What if when you print you chose print to file and then ,when offline, open printer and drag and drop the .prn file into the window.
I am thinking .prn files must have some usefulness otherwise they wouldn't be an option. I would try to do this on my computer but the printer became unplugged 8 months ago and I am too lazy to hook it back up.
PS: I haven't the slightest idea if this would work. Feel free (either you or anybody else) to vociferously disparage me in an intensely vicious and extruciating fashion.

modems usually com with comms software. these often include a fax type service which consequently sets up a fax printer. if you don't read the instructions it is easy to assume that this is your printer, but it isn't. the fax printer is really attached to your modem com port. this can cause your problem.
check your printers for such.
this software may put an entry in system.ini as well which nabs the printer port so deleting or redirecting the fax printer in 'printers' is not sufficient.

Let me be precise. Its not your printer or
any memory problem. Its the modem itself. I have experienced the same problem with the
same modem being PCI. The most I could do was
to change my modem to ISA. And believe me
ISA is far more better than any PCI ones.
I am a computer tech myself in profession
and I will recommend you to change your
modem to ISA one either a US Robotics as
that is the best and believe me you will
not face any problems again.
