My personal opinion on Norton ANYTHING is to leave it well alone.
I have fixed more machines for home users that System Works has hosed than I care to remember. Great for business, bad for non power users and even then one must be extremely careful.
Even their Antivirus has begun to cause more problems than it is worth.

I still have an ancient version of NSW on my system. Maybe things have improved but certainly CrashGuard actually caused crashes and System Doctor caused lockups.

I would never dream of running it in the background but I still find odd parts of the package useful at times. Handy for indicating that shortcut targets have gone wrong etc.

This freebie is worth looking at (bottom of page):

jv16 Power Tools

I think it is very good. The Registry Tool is useful for safely getting shot of lurking registry entries for programs that were supposed to have been uninstalled.

I suppose everyone goes with their experience, but I'm at something of a loss when I read all this bad mouthing of SystemWorks. I've been using SystemWorks for about 3 years (currently running 2002) and Norton Utilities before that. I've always found them useful in keeping my PC running at it's peak and on a number of occasions have fixed some serious problems. For instance, lost chains and file allocation errors after a power failure and the battery in my UPS was dead. One requisite for any Symantec product is a clean installation. I shut down everything except systray and explorer when I install any soft.

I'm having a long session going on another post and I made the same comments to him as I made in my #2 above.

It was interesting to read your experience, so to ensure he get's a balanced view I have referred him to it.

I sometimes think these things just depend on your software mix and how many (and what type) of bugs you have lurking around. As an example, I got on fine with Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall. Other folk regard them as the terrible twins.

Agreed... there are a number of unknowns which may have effects which are variable from user to user and system to system. As I said at the start of my first post... Everyone generally goes with their experience. I also use Roxio GoBack with great satisfaction (in fact, I wouldn't be without it). I recommended it to someone on another forum and he really chewed me out about it after he lost his hard drive when he installed it and had to reformat and reinstall the OS. Never did figure that one out. What are ya gonna do!

On the other hand, things like this are what makes these forums interesting.

BTW... I DO agree with you about CrashGuard. It's probably the worst one they ever came up with. They should have just named it CRASH!

I often hear/read many mixed opinions concerning Norton's SystemWorks 2003, I purchased it recently & although I have noticed my PC doing certain things differently (ex:doesn't run ScanDisk when computer is shut down improperly, etc.) I can't say for sure that it is attributed directly to the SystemWorks, I'm interested in hearing the experiences of others on this product.
Thanx in advance!!!
