Comment: I recently was infected by the haptime/vbs virus and it infected alot of my windows files. An important one, was Desktop.htt 3k which goes in the web/identities folder. I had to remove this file because it was infected. Now, my active desktop wont work. Not a big deal, but I'd like to get the file back. I had tried using SFC, it doesn't find it. I cannot find it on the Win 98 SE disk either. Would you know where I could download this, or would I have to reinstall windows. Also I found a second Desktop.htt file that is 20k, are there supposed to be two files like this or should they be the same. If someone happens to have these files it would be great if they could just be emailed to me. Thanks, John

Reply: (edit)The only desktop.htt file I'm able to find on my system is located in: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt I know if you change the system appearance and colors, such as adding wallpaper it will write into the file. Try this: Right click a blank area of the desktop, and select properties. Now click the Appearance tab, select Windows Standard and click Apply. I don't know if this will work, but it may force your system to rebuild the file, if not try using a file archiver such as WinZip which is capable of looking inside Microsoft .cab files to locate the desktop.htt file in a newer version of Internet Explorers setup files if the file exists, then again Internet Explorer, or Windows Explorer may create the file automatically.

Reply: (edit)The desktop.htt is created by Internet Explorer after you set an html-based wallpaper. Right click on a blank area of the desktop. Select the background tab. Select an HTML document from the list. You should have one there named Win98. Select Apply. You will now be given a message "the wallpaper you selected can be shown on the desktop only if Active Desktop is enabled". "Do you want to enable it"? Select YES. HTH Good Day! Mesich

Reply: (edit)Sorry but that didn't work. When i try to turn on the active desktop it gives me this message "the wallpaper you selected can be shown on the desktop only if Active Desktop is enabled". yet when i enable it it wont because the desktop.tt file was infected and and my virus software move it so now it's it's not there. I have a file in these two locations: C:\WINDOWS\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Internet Explorer C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\Default\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
