This is not the usual "How do I get rid of the shortcut arrows on the desktop icons?".
I had removed them on two computers, one a W98 and the other a W98SE. I downloaded the Windows Critical Updates to both computers and the arrows came back on both machines.
Now I cannot get rid of them either by changing the icon size or with Tweak UI.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Smitty

Hi...
There is a program out called ResHacker. It is made for editing Windows resources. If you direct ResHacker to the icon file in your windows dir you can change replace this shortcut icon with a transparent image or another image of your choice.
Do a search in google for "ResHacker"

Smitty,
Try and remove them manually.
Start>Run Type regeditand Enter
Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Highlight Inkfile
Delete IsShortcut value in the right pane.In the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Highlight the IsShortcut value in the right pane there also. Not sure this will work after the Critical Update.

Smitty, You can solve the problem by using System File Checker and replacing the Shell32.dll with a fresh copy from your Windows CD or your cab files(probably C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS). The Shell32.dll belongs in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.
NOTE: Doing the above will negate the Critical Update if you recently installed it. That particular Critical Update is what causes the shorcut arrows to return.
Here's what the PCForrest site has to say about it.
Tweak UI vs Critical Update #3 18-03-2002
Although I regard the vulnerability exposed by the original shell32.dll to be of little consequence (Microsoft themselves describe the risk as "moderate" which kind of contradicts the "critical" nature of the update), I am reminded by Ron Badour, MS MVP, that the best policy is, of course, to complain to Microsoft and have them provide a solution that both protects their users from the risks exposed by their software, however "moderate", and that allows them to customise their icons as they see fit. So - let's see some people-power in action, folks...http://register.microsoft.com/contactus/contactus.asp
The above came from this site.

This was caused by a recent Windows Critical Update. I fixed it by using the freeware program Windows Configurator from www.nonags.com. Open the Desktop tab in this program and you will find the option "show arrow on desktop shortcut icons" which is unchecked by default. Check the box, click "Apply, then uncheck the box and click "Apply".

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't had time to work the problem out yet but at least now I know that I was not imagining it !!!!!
Thanks

I have been looking at NoNags and I can't find the program that you mentioned. Could you please point me to it?
Thanks
Smitty

Peter, I finally found it under Power Tools.
I had done a search at their site and it came up with the wrong programs. Thanks again
Smitty

Peter, here is something strange. I downloaded Windows Config. The version that I got doesn't have the "show arrow on desktop shortcut icons" option under the Desktop tab.
Thanks
Smitty

Smitty the item Peter told you to look for under desk top tab is under the systems tab. Also it wotks fine. Thanks Peter
