DeskscanII running scanjet3p.This error message appears, but nothing else is running. The scanner will power up, but plugging in the parallel port kills it.
I have removed the scsi terminator and changed the port setting to EPP (HP advice); still doesn't work.
Shaking it, tapping it, yelling at it, and staring at it for prolonged periods of time have also proved unsuccessful.

Wait a minute, what SCSI terminator? Are you plugging in a SCSI device to a parrellel port?

No wonder it kills it, I'm surprized that's the only thing it killed.

The scanner has two plug-ins on the back and they are both labeled scsi. The connections are physically different, I am using the one that is about 2 1/2 by 3/8" , with 12 pins over 13 forming a trapezoid shape. The scsi terminator was connected to the back of the scanner when I got it. It makes no difference if I take it off or leave it on, I get the same error message: ANOTHER APPLICATION IS RUNNING OR YOUR SCANNER IS TURNED OFF. I don't know what parallel or scsi mean. I just got a cord that fits the back of my computer and the scanner, and downloaded the driver.

Ok, here's the problem. Some bonehead engineer decided way back when, that they would make some SCSI connectors the same as parrellel port connectors. This confused just about everyone.

The bottom line is, you cannot plug a SCSI device into a parrellel connector even though they look the same. You will need to purchase a SCSI card that plugs into a spare PCI slot and then plug your scanner into that.
