I have Windows 98 SE. I'm trying to install a HP Deskjet 600c printer. When it asks for the disk, it gives me an error stating that I'm missing these files:

dmcolor.dll
finstall.dll
icon.lib
unidrv.dll
hpdskjtb.drv

Suggestions on what to do I've tried downloading and selecting the file, still get error. Thanks for any help.

"When it asks for the disk"

Insert the Deskjet's driver CD and point it to it. (unless that is what you have done)

Hi Sarah.

Do you have the missing files?

If so, try putting them in your Windows\System32 folder. ( Or the Windows\System folder if that doesn't work. )

Then install your printer driver.

During installation the printer software is probably trying to find files that the Windows 98 OS should have installed when the OS was put on the hard drive.

Sometimes during installation of hardware it will ask for the CD to be put in but it means the Operating System CD not the hardware installation CD.

I had that happen with an HP Laserjet at work.

It kept asking for the CD to find missing files. I finally discovered the missing files were on the Windows 2000 CD not the HP installation CD.

Take care,

Linda

Following up Linda's thoughts, I did a bit of digging around. All of the files except finstall.dll are on the Win98SE CD (no idea about that file).

When required they go in c:\windows\system

I would do this. Type sfc in the Run box (hit OK) and go to the "extract one file" feature. Use your CD and attempt to extract each one (it will automatically offer c:\windows\system for their location).

I doubt you will find finstall.dll but at least with the others in the right place you might be able to progress this further.

I'm a bit surprised they are not on the Printer CD but if need be you can get sfc to look on that to get finstall.dll which I would suggest is also directed to the same location. Otherwise Google might help if the version isn't critical.

The install might still query these files but you could then try the "skip" option as they are already located.
