First time on a Dell machine, boy, do I feel like a dummy. Machine was given to me by someone who couldn`t get it up and running, and all I can say is I know how they felt. First I was going to check out the bios boot order, so as to boot to floppy first for a 98se install. I`m in the bios on the 1st page, don`t see anything about boot order, it says page 1 of 2, but in my stupidity, I can not figure out how to get to page 2 to see if the boot order is on that page. That is just part of my problem with this machine, the other is that I cannot get this thing to recognize the cd rom, but I will start a diff thread for that. Any help on navigating this bios would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, and any assistance.

Isn't there a kind of menu at the bottom?
"Alt-P next"
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Hi jboy, thanks for taking interest in my dilema. Yes, there is Alt-P at the bottom, tried it every which way, push alt-p at the same time, push alt first hold it down, then push p, doesn`t make any diff, still will not change the page. Thanks

Thanks DAVEINCAPS, that was it, I had to try 2 diff other keyboards before I found 1 that worked, and these are all keyboards that are working keyboards on other machines I have, don`t figure. I appreciate your taking the time to give me a hand. Have a good one.

Was it a USB keyboard giving you difficulty? Some older machines have problems, as USB keyboards weren't even around when they were built!

Hey GX1 man, no it was just a regular keyboard, not a usb. While I have you on this thread, one of the reasons I started it was to pick my way through why I cannot get this GX1 w/450 mtbr+ I have to recognize the cd-rom so as to install a new hd&windows 98se. I found a Computing.net thread on Google while researching, from 2005 in which you were trying to help someone with the exact same problem, but at the end of the thread, they didn`t reply to say if the fix you offered helped. As soon as I received the GX1(it came to me without a hd), I immediatley replaced the cmos battery, dropped in a hd, on primary channel, and hooked the cd-rom on secondary channel. So far, I have tried 3 diff floppys from 3 diff sites, took the hd, and hooked it up to the secondary to see if the cable was good, it was recognized(put it back on primary). Tried 3 different known good cd-roms, still no go. When I put the floppy in, it starts up tries to load the oak drivers, then proceedes to give me that good old MSCD001 error(device drives not found). This is the first time trying to work on a Dell(especially one of this age), and was wondering where I am going wrong, or if Dell has some kind of super secret(LOL)code you have to use. Any thoughts/hints/ideas to try that you could enlighten me with would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Usually those are set as Cable Select (CS). Make sure the drives are jumpered that way as well. Make sure the CDROM is bootable before the hard drive in the BIOS and make sure the drives are seen correctly. The primary IDE should be set as Auto and None, The Secondary also as auto and none with the hard drive on the primary channel and the CDROM on the secondary.
Let me know how this works for you. Thoase are really great old machines.

Thanks for the tips GX1 Man, cd-rom was finally recognized, OS is now installed, I appreciate your taking the time to help, have a good one.

Glad you are all fixed up and post back if any more GX problems. I trust you found everything as I said.
