I have downloaded and run Delindex with no problems - thanks for that by the way! Now, I have discovered yet another rather large index.dat file in c:\\Windows\Profiles\User Name\UserData. Is there any way to get rid of this file as well? Please help!

This file is for the various users of that computer. If you're the ~only~ user you can delete the complete sub-dir structure for this.
Boot to raw dos. (Hold down the Ctrl key or the F8 key during the initial boot up. This will give you the start menu.) Choose Command Prompt Only. When you get the C:> prompt, type in;
deltree c:\windows\profiles
and you will be asked if you're sure. If you are, type Y and enter. This will delete the profiles directory and everything below it and in it.

The USERDATA file is the Registry file relating to the user {User Name}. If you have multiple users, you should find multiple userdata files.
