Hello. I just formatted and re-installed WIN98 on my hewlett packard with Fdisk. Everything works fine, but I have uneeded partions that I don't want. My main drive is the C: drive, but it is partioned into 3 other drives. I don't use the extra drives (partions) so I want to make the C: drive just one drive. Is there anyway to delete the extra partions without deleting data on the main C: drive partion? my total hard disk capacity is 10.2 GIG. Any help is appreciated. Thankyou.

Yes use partition magic it will merge all partitions into one without losing any data at all.

You may want to also consider Partition Commander by VCOM. It too will do the job and you may be able to find it at a better price than Partition Magic. Do a google on both and see what comes up. When I purchased my copy of Partition Commander way back when, I found it for $24 including tax and shipping. I've used both and my personal preference is for Partition Commander. Easy to use and understand graphic interface.

Hello,

 Organize Your Data
==============================================
(from a PowerQuest article)
Partitioning allows you to manage your hard drive more efficiently. Your computer views each partition as a separate hard drive, automatically giving it a drive letter, allowing you to conveniently organize your hard drive and maximize the performance of your system. Dividing your hard drive into separate partitions plays an essential role in maintaining your computer-preventing conflicts,
protecting data,improving efficiency, and increasing performance.
==============================================
Usually people want to partitionate their
HDD and that's good. For Win98SE  a  2-3GB will be enough. The other two partitions you

have (D and E) can be used to put your
private data and installing  programs.If you ever need to reinstall
Win98SE after a big crash   (caused by a virus for example) or
install another Windows version, you need first to formate your C drive
and  everything you have on C will be lost. Only the stuff on D and
E will remain untouched.

See here a few considerations on this so very hot issue.

be well

Stefan

PS: please don't hurry to merge your HDD
partitions.

Post questions about this issue to other
forums, too.

Hello Yumico,

I'm in agreement with Stefan. Although you can use these utilities to make your hard drive one single partition, it doesn't really matter. Your other partitions can hold data and programs the same as one hard drive and like Stefan stated, you can put data on the other partitions and they'll be more secure in case of a crash. I have my hard drive partitioned 4 ways and I keep most of the data I really don't want to loose on one other than C:\. I also have a folder named Program Files on one of the other partitions that I install most of my programs on. When you install a program, it usually wants to defualt installing it to C:\Program Files. All I do is change the C to my other drive letter, in my case is E. Anyway, you can do whatever suits your needs.

Have a good one,
Larry

Also keep in mind that your current partitions being less than 8gb in size are likely using 4kb clusters or allocation units.
In order to have one partition greater than 8gb you must first change them to 8kb clusters. Partition Magic can perform this task too.

I am not familiar with Partition Commander.

I also agree with Stefan and Larry to a degree.

Personal data and Standalone programs on a separate partition but the installed programs that default to C:\Programs; I prefer to keep them there unless all of your installed programs are on another partition.

I feel this way because when you add something like a plugin or an update it will again want to default to C:\Programs and you must first remember or look it up to be sure where you need to add the updates.
