OS: Windows 98 SE
CPU/Ram: 400/384
Model/Manufacturer: Dell/Dimension xps R 400
Comment:
I have acquired 2 icons in the task bar at the right bottom of my monitor. they are for a program named "Spy-Locked. Both icons alternate between 2 other icons all 4 opening the same window for downloading program. I have looked everywhere I can think of to elininate these but can't seem to do it. I will appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks
Duane A Hertel

In general you have some control over the icons by going to START--SETTINGS--TASKBAR AND START MENU. You can also run MSCONFIG and click the 'startup' tab and uncheck those items you don't want running.

But as Tufenuf says, you need to remove spy locked and not just keep its icons from coming up. LEGITMATE anti-malware software like Adaware will probably remove it. The problem with adaware is I don't think their current version runs with 98. I use an older version that I keep updated with their definition files.

If you're lucky spy locked will show up in 'add/remove programs' in control panel and you can remove it that way.

There's also something called Hijackthis, mentioned in Tufenuf's links. You can download it here:

http://www./blog...

(They'll suggest downloading other stuff too. Just ignore that.) Running hijackthis will show all the thing that are loaded or running. Check any of the 'spy locked' references and then click 'remove'.

Exit hijackthis and reboot the computer. When it comes back up, open explorer and browse to the Program Files folder. Delete the Spy Locked folder if it's still there.

That should take care of Spy Locked. But you may have other malware running too. Although the hijackthis program doesn't specifically identify malware there are sites that will analyze its log and suggest what should be removed.
