Still if I type in Ask.com for example my address bar will access and bring up old question and take me to it in ask jeeves. Other old addresses still pop up if I type in manually even though when i hit address bar normally it will be clear. Where are these old addresses hiding and how do I delete them once and for all please.

Yo people I think I got the answer...If you set the days to zero then maybe all of the addresses will be deleted on the same day. Well I've just figured that out but I don't know if that works though.

But I still can't find a way to delete only one address. Help me!!!!!

I can't find a way to delete the old addresses that drop down in my internet explorer address bar.

I've tried clearing the history in internet options, setting the keep pages for 0 days, clearing the typedurls in the registry. I've searched the registry for these addresses. I've even tried TweakUI98 - paranoid setttings.

Can anyone tell me how I can get rid of those entries?

This is in reply to my original question - Reponse #40. My help came from many sources and hopefully this will help someone here.

What happens is that even after you use all the tools that I had mentioned in the previous posting, what's left are the Favorites area bookmarks and the Desktop items. These will be viewed as either inline or drop down autocompletes.

As far as the Favorites bookmarks are concerned, you can use a program like Private Bookmarks to move them out of the Favorites area. Another way is to export them and then delete the entries but this is cumbersome. The result is that these entries will no longer show in autocomplete.

As to the Desktop items, these are an integral part of Windows 98 and cannot be removed. I believe they refer to it as the Windows Desktop Update component. It is also included in IE4 but not included in IE5, although it can be added later. To this end, all one has to do is keep private information off the Desktop area. Copy & paste the address below if you want to know more about the Windows Desktop Update component.

I had the damndest time trying to delete my addresses. It took me quite a-while but I finnaly went to my Internet options:(Which mine is under tools, you'res my be under view. But when you find it, go to delete all files from temporary Internet options and go into clear history. Delete all items from history, and then you can select the number of days go to zero, and nothing will stay on your address bar once you've typed it in there. Pretty cool, huh?If you have problems e-mail me and I'll help you. God knows I wish I didn't have to spend so much time figuring it out for myself. Later. Good Luck.

Reply to Animal - Response #49.

I tried all that you suggested but I still had my Favorite Bookmarks & Desktop items showing up in the address bar autocomplete.
Maybe it works it some cases but it did not for me.

By the way folks, I know that I had forgotten to mention in my previous postings #40 & #41 that you need to clear your Temporary Internet Files in Internet Properties but I figured anyone who has read this far already knew that.

One last note, and this should be obvious as well, if you have opted to store Forms and Passwords be sure to go back into the Internet Properties and under the Content tab look for the Personal Information section, then click the AutoComplete and clear those.

My last reponse #50 mentioned clearing your Forms and Passwords.

Use this option only if you have deceided that you do not want autocomplete to store this type of information. Make sure you have a list of your passwords stored in a safe place.

I don't know if there is an easier way to delete a single address, but here is one way to do it.

In Internet Explorer, when you click on either the Favorites or History button a frame will appear on the left side of the screen. You can search for the offensive address by running through the folders and subfolders. When your mouse is over a link it will show a pop-up with the URL address of that link.

Another way, if you prefer, is to open your C:\Windows\Favorites and C:\Windows\History folders and then search through them.

If you are unable to locate the address you are looking for, remember to check your Desktop area. Any Shortcut to a Web page that you have placed on the Desktop or any Web Page that has been saved to the Desktop will autocomplete in your Address Bar.

i have just received confirmation from Compaq support that there is actually no way of deleting single addresses from the address bar in Internet Explorer.. the only options available are to either leave them all there or delete every one of them in one go. i think it's pretty stupid with all this technology that such an easy task can not be carried out due to carelessness in the design of the software... Bill Gates should have been better prepared!

the response when you start to type an address is called the autocomplete

as far as i am aware its not possible to delete these items

however it is possible to stop them coming into view

go to desktop
right click internet explorer
click properties
click content
click autocomplete
click the tick on web addresses to remove it
click ok
click ok
try it now

otherwise check internet explorer properties for autocomplete.

if i find out how to delete these items ill post it

Hello again. Can anyone help me delete addresses from address bar. I'm using AOL which isn't as easy. You can just click on Hotmail Inbox up the top in address bar and bring up my hotmail Inbox. Nobody even needs a password. So much for your e-mails being private. If I've been in to check mine it shows up in the address bar and other people can just click on it and go into it. What can I do to stop this. PLEASE HELP. AOL seens to show up every little thing you do. I've used other computers and it just shows up that you went to Hotmail in address bar and you have to still enter your user name, password. AOL has showed up my Hotmail Inbox in address bar why? I only typed in Hotmail at the top, but every little thing I have done after that has showed up in there. I DON'T LIKE IT! CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

For users of Internet Explorer, got ot Start Run, type "regedit" without the quotes, then HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs and delete them from there.

This will enable you to delte one, 2, or any number of the addresses from appearing.

After typing in "regedit" without the quotes, please hit enter, and do not attempt to type in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Typed URLs and delete them from there.

In the Run box. Thankyou

There are 2 ways that address may remain to be seen by others.

1) If you hit the drop down arrow, and see a bunch of addresses that you want to get rid of, these can be deleted by clearing the history in Internet Explorer:

Go to "Tools" then "Internet Options" then use the "Clear History" Button.

2) The second way that an old address will come back to haunt you:
If you start to type, and the address of a site that you have visited before, appears in the address bar, then the site is stored in your favorites folder, and needs to be deleted from there.
---------------
If you don't want anyone to see where you've been surfing, clear the history, and don't store these pages in your favorites, because even if you give them a different name in favorites, the real url will appear on your address bar when you type the first few letters of it.

For those of you who have tried everything to get rid of those addresses that keep reappearing in the address bar try this - it finally did the job for me. Restart in MS-DOS mode. At the C:\> prompt, type deltree c:\windows\history and then press Enter. Then type deltree c:\windows\tempor~1 and press Enter. (This process can take several minutes depending on how large these .dat files are. The nest time you start IE5 I hope you have the same results I fianlly got - no more addresses!!!

Netscape users:
To delete the Addresses from the Bar in 4 & 4.5,
Do a search for "prefs.js" and "liprefs.js" files, these are jave script files which are generated each time you use NS. Open the files in NOTEPAD.exe. Read the warning and delete the single offensive line(s) which looks like "user_pref("browser.url_history.URL_8", "www.yourbusted.net");". **** DO NOT DELETE THE ENTIRE FILE **** Do this to both files. You can use what ever text editor you prefer. Notepad is fine.

Works for me. Should work for you too! Be sure to whack the semicolon at the end of the line.

IE5 users, AOL or Bill Gates Orignal:
Do you want to save your links and pickoff a few bad addresses? Read On.

First READ MESSAGE #100 then come back

You need the History button on the MENU BAR. If it is not visible, You have four (+) options for getting buttons and menus visible to cover your tracks.
* With IE open, Press "CTRL & H" keys. Did it work? No, Next...

* Search through every backdoor until you find the buttons/pulldowns you need to enable these options (explaned in the first 100 messages).

* Open the registry and enable the menu options from inside windows. See MENU#1. below.

* Run a java script HTML file. See HTML#1 Sample file (Copy and paste the text to local drive, save as "yourname.HTML". Open with your browser. It should restore the buttons).

In any case, the best method is to use IE to delete the URL's or naughty links which you no longer wish to see. With 'History' activated, expaned the links under Today, Monday, Thursday, 1 week, bla blah...
Delete the undesired links or base folders. If you are really trying to protect yourself, just purge everything, it is much easier (see prior messages). Close IE.
From the RUN menu type 'regedit' (you need to delete everything you typed or pasted into IE address bar) and navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs] and delete the link that started the whole problem. Close the registry. Open IE. Type in the link www.isawtomuch.... and see if it auto completes. If "www.i" autocompletes to form "www.isawtomuch.com", you missed something. NOTE: Use a link that you typed, Not my example!

This should have cleared the undesirable, and preserved the rest.

If you do not wish to open the registry, perform the following copy & paste the following text] regedit /e c:\temp\explinks.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs"[
(starting with Regedit, ending with double quote into the run command box).

This will export your typed links from the registry to a file in "C:\temp\" called "explinks.reg". Open this file in notepad and edit out the addresses you visisted. Save and exit. Make sure Notepad does not rename it to a ".txt" file.
Double click on the file. It will import itself into the registry overwriting the old data.

You can also paste as text this same string, saving as a batch file (explink.bat). Double click on the batch file. It runs, you edit, you import (doubleclick), you done.

HTML#1 START]

window.open("file:///c:/windows/readme.txt","newwindow","toolbar=yes,location=yes,directories=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,width=640,height=480,left=0,top=0")
history.back();

[HTML#1 END

This is java script. Do not break it down into individual lines or it may error out. Pasting this type of data into this web page will most likely ruin it anyway. So you may want to place it in an editor where you can see the paragraph markers. There should not be any! Just one long line.

Turning on the buttons:
MENU#1
Perform the following:
Paste]regedit /e c:\temp\setup.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main"[
(starting with regedit, ending with double quote into the run command box).
This will export your IE setup options from the registry to file "C:\temp\setup.reg". Open this file in notepad and enable "Show_ToolBar"="yes". Save and exit.
Double click on the file. It will import itself into the registry overwriting the old data.
Can you see the History Button? You may need use the pulldown menu: VIEW>EXPLORER BAR>HISTORY to see the History of sites visited and or do CUSTOMIZE and ADD the HISTORY button back if someone has removed it. In either case "CTRL H" should work even if the button can not be seen.

Use this advice at your own risk! I learned by looking and reading on one or two boxes (PC's) this may not work on 2000 or ME, but 95,98, & NT should be OK.

Enough said....

/Chief

Readers,
Here is a patch to the above message (#109). The upload into this forum, messed up the html code.
The transition stripped the left and right arrows from the HTML code, as well as 'html', 'head' and 'script' at both the begining and the end.
COPY and PASTE, follow text below.
[HTML#1]
*html?*head?*script language="javascript"?window.open("file:///c:/windows/readme.txt","newwindow","toolbar=yes,location=yes,directories=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,width=640,height=480,left=0,top=0")history.back();*/script?*/head?*/html?
[HTML#1]

*** After you paste this into your editor,
REPLACE the '*' with 'leftarrow' character,
REPLACE the '?' with 'rightarrow' character',
or it will do nothing at all! I placed these here in Hopes that it would preserve the text, as it is uploaded into this forum. There are SIX of EACH!
As mentioned, Save as anyname.html and double click on the file name with your browser open.
It will restore your menu buttons.

This is java script. Do not break it down into individual lines or it may error out. You WILL have to place it in an editor where you see the Paragraph Markers. There should not be any! Just one long line. This is common java script. Most every site you visit does the same thing to open a new window. They usually turn off the menus, bars, go, and status bars. It is safe.

Let me know if you need any other pointers.

/Chief
