I can not get either Defrag Disk (from System Tools) or the Defrag Disk (from Maintenance Wizard) to work. The computer locks down. I have the hour glass but the computer does not respond. I've tried everything but what works! Please and thank you!

Try shutting down all programs first. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and end tasks on them, leave Systray and Explorer running. Close or disable any virus programs and the screen saver also.
Try right clicking on C: in My Computer and choosing scandisk first. Always run scandisk before defrag. Set defrag so it does not Align programs and try it that way.

I'm having trouble defragmenting my computer. When I try to defragment, it stays at 0% and never moves on. I read the response above. It said to shut down all programs, end all tasks except Systray and Explorer, and close any virus programs and the screen saver. I've done all that.
Then it says to click on C: in My Computer and choose scandisk first. I did that, and it went into McAfee Viruscan. I clicked "Scan Now", and after a few seconds it stopped. I went into Systems tools and tried to defragment again, and it just stayed at 0%. Could someone help me? Please and thank you!

scandisk and defrag are actually DOS commands, so try running them from DOS...

Windows 98
1.Go to Start > Run and type (msconfig) in the Open: box
2.On the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective startup (make sure that Selective startup is selected)
3.Hit apply and OK and restart Windows
4.This starts Windows with only the basics running; Insures nothing will interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag
5.Run ScanDisk and Defrag, when ready go into msconfig and select Normal startup and restart Windows
(If you use Windows 95, restart your system, when you see the Starting Windows 95... text on your screen, quickly press the F8 key. From the menu that follows, choose Safe mode, and run ScanDisk & Defrag. When ready, reboot.)

It work for me.
