I was defraging my c:/ drive and it kept restarting. I went to my system tools repair kit and scanned the defrag. It said I had two bad files do I want them repaired. I clicked yes. Now I get C:/windows/Defrag.exe not a valid WIN32 application? Do I need to install Fat32 to get it running?

Looks like at least one of the files deleted was a system file. I would reinstall Windows over your present system.

Judging by your post the problem is that there isn't any OS, at least that's worth mentioning anyway. I hope that someday people will realize the importance of, at the very least, listing the OS & version. If it's w98 1st or later, run sfc.

I'd like to know what "system tools repair kit" there is that would "scanned the defrag" and then say anything about "bad files do I want them repaired"
sfc sure doesn't fix files an antivirus would attempt but a virus in defrag besides whatever was used to "scan defrag" found 2 files!!

I don't care for that dang system tools repair kit (oh my gosh - I didn't even reinstall it when I reformatted my harddrive - I hate it that much hehe)! First, do you possibly have a nice recent backup of your system? You could restore from the backup and fix your problem(s). If not that, have you tried reinstalling just that file? Try using the System File Checker under System Information/System Tools/ and check extract one from installation disk. Put your windows 98 cd in and specify defrag.exe in the spot to specify what file you'd like to restore. Then where to restore from - specify the location of the file. On the 98 cd, it is in the Win98_40.cab File DEFRAG EXE 253,952 05-11-98 8:01p.
Summary: I have an early version of the Win95 upgrade CD and have just installed 2 new HDs (1 6GB and 1 10GB), each with multiple 2GB FAT 16 partitions. DEFRAG.EXE gives me an error message a few % into the d...
Summary: Go to Start > Run type SFC and click OK. Select the `Extract one file ..... ' option. Enter defrag.exe in the window and proceed. Defrag should be extracted to c:\windows. Repeat for scanreg.exe and s...
