i have 98se, and i try to defrag and it gets to 10% everytime and says' Drive contents changing" and it starts over. THere is NOTHING open, only explorer and systray. Power managment and screen saver is disabled. Any ideas? about 400mb left on a 4gb hard drive.

This happens to me too,just let it run;it will do the job,nothing to worry about.If you can,try to get the winme_defrag off the net,it is a LOT faster;half the time 98 is.

Probably be easier for you to do it once in safe mode to clean it up, then it would be a good idea as Tony said to get the WinME defrag utility. It will defrag your HD in less that 10 minutes if you do it regularly. Here is a link for install info and download

thanks. it hasnt been defraged in about a year so hopefully safemode will work. I tried leaving it on but that didnt work, it just kept getting to 10% for about 3 hours.

Winme defrag works pretty well but Power defrag works better. It is a free download and it shuts everything down, defrags and then reboots your machine back up. It is a freebie. Only good for 95 and 98 and not for DSL/Cable. Go to google search engine and type in Power Defrag.
