Every time I try to run defrag it goes to 1% then jumps back to 0%. It does this for hours. Scan disk does the same... only with scan disk it gives me an error message that scan disk has restarted 10 times because windows is writing to the hard drive.

I've disabled my antivirus software, and used ctrl+alt+del to close everything but systray and explorer. That still does no good. Screen saver and power saver settings are turned off. I can't think of anything else to try.

I did get scandisk to run through dos and it found no errors.

I no longer run Windows 98 on my machine; I run Windows 2000 now. However, I seem to remember the same thing happening to me when I did run Windows 98.

What I did was first restart Windows in Safe Mode. Next I did the ctrl+alt+del thing to close all programs except systray and explorer. Then Scandisk would run. Then I could defrag my hard drive.

Good luck!

In safe mode (F8) you don't need the
ctrl+alt+del thingy. Safe mode should do the trick, Chris......also if Defrag ever says it won't start due to disc errors, and you've checked that there are no errors, you can choose a setting at the start of defrag so that it won't check the state of your disc first....and it will start defraging ok.
Hope this is of some help...Roy.

The ctrl+alt+del 'Close Program' window doesn't really show everything that's running. Use 'safe' mode.

Get the WinME defrag as L.G. said.

Go to "My Documents" and create a New Folder, name it something like: Auto Defrag and Scandisk.

Download both of the above (direct download links)

And save them both to the new folder you created in My Documents.

Both of these perfrom the same way.
When you double click on either one (I recommend Scandisk first) you will be prompted to Re-Start your computer.
When the computer restarts, it will run scandisk just after your desktop background appears and before anything else has a chance to load.
If effect, there will be no programs loaded or running during the scandisk process.

What they do is write a batch file to the Runonce in the registry. It will also place a temp file in C:\Windows\Temp folder. Delete them after you are done with both of them. The .reg file removes itself when completed.

Once complete, do the same with the defrag.

Defragmenting Your Hard Drive
Defragment your system in "Safe Mode" to prevent programs running
in the background (ie: anti-virus program or other TSRs) from writing to the
hard disk and interrupting the defragmentation but even then a sound
card , a cable connection or a screensaver can interrupt this process.
If necessary temporarily disable those as well.
Running Scandisk first is also a good idea.Scandisk can also be
interrupted by the above.

Download a fast defragment program like WinMe Defrag to replace
your current 9X version of Defrag. It zooms compared to the original.
Go to http://www.surecool.com and download it into
your C:/Windows directory. Rename your current version of
DEFRAG.EXE to DEFRAG.OLD, then rename WinMe_DEFRAG.exe
to DEFRAG.exe . see #68362 and http://www.surecool.com/ReadFirst.htm
