orig message:
in win 98, i've tried running defrag for the first time. after doing a little work, it sends the following message: "drive contents changed: restarting". this happen exactly every minute. i've disabled power management in bios and disabled the screensaver. when i hit ctrl+alt+del, the following programs are running: explorer & systray. the message doesn't correspond to the clock changing on the task bar, but it does happen every minute. any ideas how i can get this thing to run?

now.... in addition:
1. there are no "scheduled tasked"
2. shutting down systray doesn't help
3. the following "running tasks" are shown when using the "system information" program:
Kernel32.dll
MSGSRV32.EXE
Mprexe.exe
MMTASK.TSK
Netfbase.exe
Explorer.exe
Taskmon.exe
Systray.exe
Alertmgr.exe
Monbase.exe
Msinfo32.exe
Spool32.exe
which of these 'need' to run, and which of these can i stop, and how do i stop them (only "explorer" shows when ctrl+alt+del hit)?

and 4. hitting cpu with hammer doesn't work.

why is this so hard??????
bill gates, are you out there?????

Have patients and let it restart how ever may times it takes because you have likely made many changes with out ever defraging

Don't do anything while you run defrag. The best thing to do is just to start it and leave it alone until its done. It is supposed to and will restart every time you do something that accesses the hard drive. Pretty much all those programs running are necessary and won't help to disable them. That is normal for only those programs to show up in Ctrl+Alt+Del. You don't ever need to close the others.

Disable any screensavers and trun off power management. also in your cmos desable power management. try this to see if it works or you can always get your self a copy of norton speed disk for windows 95 98 and use it. it works much better then the defrag that comes with windows 9x

make sure you go to start menu , settings, control panel, power management and disable it as well as in the cmos or bios.

I have EXACTLY the problems described above and have attempted to resolve it using the same methods without success. One thing that WILL work is running the defrag from DOS.

running in safe mode still only went 10% for me and then restarted. After 3 times, I rebooted back to normal Win98 mode... still cannot defrag... this sucks.

You're right, it helps to make sure that no unnecessary programs are running in the background as they may write to disk and cause the defrag process to restart.

In your list of running tasks, there are two Netfinity tasks running .. Netfbase.exe and Monbase.exe. Netfinity is a software utility used to remotely takeover a machine - similar to the Symantec PC anywhere software. To temporarily disable this, open a MS-DOS screen, switch to the Netfinity directory, (usually c:\wnetfin) and issue the command "netfbase /shutdown".

I also read that it may help to :
- turn off the virtual memory system setting.
- disable the system clock.
- change wallpaper to none.

Hope this helps.

You can run defrag before the windows login
by finding the defrag.inf file on the win95/98 CD (\tools\mtsutils\defrag or something), right-clicking and selecting install. It will now run every time you boot up before anything else starts. To remove it,
just run regedit and remove the defrag string under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce

Hope it helps.
