Hey. I'm trying to defrag my system so I can split the partition, but It keeps restarting. I left it on over night for a couple days, and it wouldn't complete. It used to do this, but not nearly so often. I also noticed the little hdd indicator light is almost always flashing, even when nothing is open. I tried running in safe mode, and ctrl+alt+del everything except explorer and defrag, but it still restarts. I don't want to spend money on a third-party, so I'm stuck. I either need the solution to the problem (this would be best, because everything else is slower now), or a free third party defrag util. It's strange that something is always using the hdd. (Not spyware or virus, internet doesn't work anymore) NAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

Right on the bleow link and select "Save target as". Save it to your desktop. Right click on the file and select Merge and when prompted select yes to merge it with your registry.
defrag.regRestart the PC and it will run defrag before anything loads on the PC. When it is done it deletes itself from the registry's RunOnce key. Better than doing it in SafeMode.

It sounds like you might have a bad guy running in the background. Go to the Security and Virus forum and click on the link near the top of the page that says:
'Click here for some useful security tools.'

Win ME defrag works much better, even with processes running in the background. Search Google for download sites.

Thanks allabodies. But I already solved the problem. I replaced my defrag with ME defrag, and then downloaded power defrag, which effectively does the same thing as the above registry entry.
