Defrag Problem

I'm not able to get my defrag past 2%, each time it gets to there it starts over. I've removed everything from start up except Explorer & System Trays, ran Norton Anti Virus but found no infected files. I'm on Cable Modeum and have not installed anything new. I did send an email to someone a week ago who said it was infected but didn't know by what. Any help would be great!

1. Get the Win Me defrag utility 2. Run it in safe mode. Press F8 during bootup. www.surecool.com

What version of Norton are you using? If it is a version that uses File System Real Time Protection, you MUST turn off that feature while you defrag or the defrag will not work.

Defrag runs absolutely fine with NAV autoprotect running. It does not do so with McAfee and others.
If you are sending emails that are infected, I think I would be concerned. Are you definitions uptodate? Try the TrendMicro online version to check.

Well Hmmm,
I'm glad that it works for you, but...
I'm the admin on a 400 node network using Norton Corporate Edition. When we first installed, we started having problems running defrag. Per Norton's Tech support, this is a very common problem with the newer versions of NAV using Real Time Protection on 9x machines.
Give it a try and see if it works.

Just for the record... My ME Defrag works fine with Mcafee running.
With Taskmon permanantly turned off it completes in less than 3 minutes using it weekly.
At work I have Norton and ME Defrag. Norton will inturupt several times during the defrag but ME Defrag is so fast it will still complete the process regardless.

Some software firewalls will interfere with defrag. (Notably Zone Alarm)
Doubt it! Unless of course you are connected to the net and surfing while you are defragging! Otherwise, there is no reason for it to be writing to the disk.

I suggest closing all of the TSR's before running a Defrag. Hld down the Crtl-Alt-Del keys all at once. This will bring up the Close Program Box. Highlight each item by left clicking with the mouse and then left click on End Task. Remove all of these except Explorer & Systray and then try running the Defrag. This should work!
