Every time i run either the defrag that comes with windows or Norton's speeddisk it will get up to about 8% and then resets. It nevers gets above 10%, so the defrag just keeps running and running. any ideas?
Make sure you have no anti-virus or other programs running in the background. If all else fails try running it in safe mode.

Defrag will reset everytime your windows or a program does something in the background.
Screen savers are notorious for reseting defrag. Besure there are no programs running any tasks in the background or anything sschedualed programs/apps.
A fool proof (no offense :-) ) way is to run in 'safe' mode. Hold down the crtl key during a boot to get to safe mode.

Wouldn't a badly fragmented drive take forever to defragment in safe mode? I'd try closing all programs (ctl+alt+del) except explorer & systray - turn off the anti virus - set screen saver to none - set turn off monitor/hard disk/standby to never. If this works ok defragment on a regular basis & it should run through fairly quickly.

Ty, Follow the instructions for deleting the Applog file from the Microsoft Article link below my name(homepage:)then, as others have stated run Scandisk then Defrag in SAFE mode. Deleting the Applog file should sove the hangup problem and don't worry Windows will recreate it.
