Comment:

Unable to defrag because every 5 minutes: "drive:s content changed" and defrag starts over. I got diskaction utility to see what is accessing the drive, got MSGSRV32, MSTASK, EXPLORER, and KERNEL32. I cannot narrow it down because when II run defrag and diskaction the computer freezes. I could not delete these system apps anyway, so what can I do ?

Defrag in Safe Mode by tapping F6 during the boot process.

Safe mode should do the trick but in the long term you would be best to find out just what is interrupting it.

Screensavers can do it.

SpyBot TeaTimer can do it.

Spyware/Malware/Trojans/Viruses can do it.

All the programs in the system tray next to clock are running permanently in the background. Often they have disables if you click around inside the icons. Sometimes you can disable programs and use a shortcut to the .exe file instead (so that they only run when you want them to).

Typing sfc in the Run box and selecting Startup tab will also give you a list of running tasks. It is safe to temporarily untick any of these except ScanRegistry. This website will help show you what the entries are about:
STARTUP ITEMS

Just a correction, Glitchman recommended entering safe mode by pressing F6, I've always found 'F8' works.

Yep F8, looks like a typo. On some W98 machines holding Ctrl key when booting also gets to startup menu. Then select Safe Mode.

Yes, F8 works too, as it brings up the menu of options. F6 is just quicker since it bypasses that menu. :)

or you could make sure that you have nothing running except systray and explorer when you defrag. you can check this by hitting ctrl+alt+del and hitting end task on anything except systray and explorer. what ever you do, do not close "systray and explorer". otherwise your system won't work right till you restart it.

which defragmenter have you used? Maybe you can try automatic defragmenters which take of regular defrag in the background. They may be well equipped to handle situations where the disk content is changing during defrag. Defrag may also fail if there isnt enough free space, say about 20-25%.

The defrag.exe on Windows ME is "way faster" than the W98 version, you just replace the file. Google around for it or I can send it if you wish. You will still need to deal with the interruptions tho.
