Just in the past few days, everytime I try to run Disk Defrag it locks my system. I cntl+ALT+DLT and get a "Warning" messege that the "system is busy or has become unstable! You can wait for it to finish or return to defrag. Press any key to continue"
If I press any key...that's it...show's over...I must hold power button 4-6 seconds to shut down PC. HEEEEEEEEELP!!!

Run your defrag in Safe Mode or go to www.mesich.com and get winME defrag. It's much faster than Win 98 defrag. When you run a defrag out of windows, there are too many programs running in the background and bog the system down. Best bet, Safe mode.

Thanx for the reply Grass, but I've already stopped every other running program except for Explorer, and tried it in safe mode, both with the same result. My screen actually locks up before the defrag even starts(right after I click "OK" on the "select drive to defrag" screen. Any other thoughts/suggestions???

Hi Pooper and Grasshopper,

Did you try using the WinME defrag?

Try doing this first. Put your win 98 cd in the tray and click Start / Run and type SFC. This will check your system for corrupt or damaged files. Worth a shot.

Dear Misech n GrassHopper:

Thanx for hangin in there with me, but still no luck. Tried defrag about 20 times and locked my system ALL but once. I've Scandisked, Safe Moded, SFC'ed, reseated connectors, and kicked my tower once...but still no change.

I've tried searchin the web but cannot find someone that's had this problem??????

AAAUUUGHHH!!!

No luck with the System File Checker. It found 2 corrupt files(restored them), and a gazillion other "changed" files, but had no effect on my defrag problem.

Misech: How do I get ahold of WinME Defrag?
and What if I just reinstalled Windows?

Thanx a ton,

Pooper

Download WinME Defrag from the link below.

WinME Defrag

Unzip it and click on the install.bat file.
It will install the WinME defrag and rename your current defrag to defrag.old.

Post back with the results.
