Defrag error

Comment:

When running Win98 defrag utility I have recently started getting an error when defragging my D drive. (2nd HD) The error is "Defrag00205". This happens when the option to rearrange programs to load faster is selected. The problem seemed to start after loading Mcafee VirousScan 4.0. Uninstalling has not corrected the problem. The boot drive and other partitions on 2nd HD work fine.

Any Ideas?

All I can say is to throw Mcaffee Virusscan 4.0 away. It caused nothing but trouble on my computer. Get Norton Anti- works much better. Sorry, don't know how to fix your prob.

I have the same prob....with McAffee 4.0 too..funny that even after running scandisk the problem remains....and only with the d: drive. Any suggestions would be helpful at this point, as I am seriously considering formatting my HD to avoid the sluggish performance...

Don't bother formatting your drive, I tried it and the error still remains. I also have the same problem with my D drive, BUT I don't have McAffee, I have NORTON!!! (and disabling it doesn't help either.

I had the same problem. It is a damaged APPLOG file in the hidden c:\windows\applog folder. Solution: unhide all the hidden files on c:

Go to the c:\windows\applog folder and delete all the files inside this folder. You will then be able to defrag your drive D:

Rob walkers fix is the correct fix and does work. The Applog files in the applog folder must be deleted to fix your can't defrag drive D error message.

I periodically delete the whole APPLOG directory/folder. When the thing gets really large it seems like it takes a month for MS-Defrag or Norton Speed Disk (SD32.exe) to read the thing. Windows will recreate it. You can automaticall delete it by writing a batch file.
"cd\windows
deltree /y applog
cd\"
name it "killapplog.bat" and store it in the root directory of your boot drive. Then in your autoexec.bat write "call Killapplog.bat"

Bonus, you get to save some disk space....that dratted thing can grow to 20 megs or more.
