Is it true Microsoft will discontinue support for Win 98 at the end of June ??
What happens to us with Win 98? Over the past few months when the update reminder shows. The scan for updates always advises there are no critical updates available. Have they given up on us? Will we be vulneerable to whatever?? I would appreciate your comments Thanks Vicp

The support for windows 98 has already been discontinued..
June will start the discontinued support for ME and 2000.

sorry let me retract that... 98 had been sent to end of life cycle... extended support is till june 30 06.
me and 2000 are set to be added to the end of life cycle... cant find the date on it right now.

Don't worry to0 much about updates. I've been running Win98 systems for years without a single update.
Just make sure you have an uptodate anti virus and probably more important a good firewall.Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

At the designated monment, all computers (worldwide) that are still stubbornly running Windows 98 will spontaneously burst into flame, at the same time emitting an electromagnetic pulse that will erase all magnetic media in a fifty foot radius - as well, an ultrahigh frequency sound wave will madden animals for miles around.
Don't panic
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

it's important for medium - large businesses to not have a totally unsupported, dead OS, but home users are fine.
You'll still be able to find device drivers although with great difficulty for the majority of new products. (But you will have noticed that for the last few years).
M$ aggressively encourages upgrades because that's how it makes money.
websites such as www.oldversion.com will continue to provide software which works with Win98
Although there'll be no critical updates, on the other hand, malware writers lose/have lost interest in writing for outmoded O.S.'s.
And, how many times have you actually used M$ for support?
The main question is how long you want to persist with old device drivers and hardware.

Since most of the questions asked on this forum are about new computers, new operating systems and there problems..........
Win98se hummmm......Maybe your lucky Microsoft is leaving 98se alone from
now on.

As was stated in Response#3
Keep your Virus Scan & Firewall updated.
Also a very important thing to keep updated is Internet Explorer and Outlook express, unless you use a different browser and email.
That is where most of the holes are at in the Windows9X products, not the OS it's self.
As Ham30 said "I've been running Win98 systems for years without a single update."I was the same way from 1998 until 2003..
Ran Windows98FE with not one update and never had any problems.

I wouldn't worry too much about the discontinued status.
I still run 95C after 9 years. I just make sure that my antivirus and firewall are on auto update for the definitions (Norton 2001) so that I am always protected against attacks.

Relying on IE & OE is considered by many to be inviting security problems - ymmv
No security method is 100%, and Norton is certainly not without its detractors (I won't be using it)
Much depends on the user and their habits - there's nothing like a 'false sense of security'
Probably the biggest thing in favour of 9x security is that malicious program authors tend to target the popular, NT based Windows & can't be bothered to design for obsolete versions - more bang for their buck (so to speak)
