Every time I attempt to download item thru use of IE6 internet browser, I get shut-down and receive this message: DDHelp caused a General Protection Fault in module GDI.exe at 0001:0001bef
My current DirectX version is 8 (in case that pertains to this problem).

Is it version 8.0 or 8.1? If you have 8.1, the version of DDHelp.exe should be 4.08.01.0881. In Windows\System, check the Properties of Dxdiag.exe. This should also be version 4.08.01.0881. If it is an earlier version, search the Windows folder for the correct version. If you find it, use System File Checker to move it to Windows\System from its current location, then reboot. Run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and open the DirectX files tab. If any problem files are identified, write them all down and their version numbers, then search for later versions, and again use SFC to move these to Windows/System. If you had the same problem that I had when I updated to DirectX 8.1, then the problem is that the updated files were installed in Windows\VCM instead of Windows\System.
