ddeml.dll is in the Win98_31.cab file on your Win98 CD. Use the System File Checker to extract it into the C:\Windows\System folder.

I've got the same problem that occurs when I install Hp 840c printer driver.
I go in the cab file tocatch the win98 DDEML.DLL then install it (in dos session because win98 use it) but it does not make any change... "DDEML has been modified by an older version, restart windows to correct"
But no correction occurs !

Any help to solve this boring problem ?
E-mail me please

I resolved this by simply setting attrib +r read only parameter on ddeml.dll. You will need to boot to the command prompt and goto the systems directory. Then issue ATTRIB +R DDEML.DLL.

I ran into this problem when I upgraded to Windows 98, Second Edition. After reviewing the Microsoft fix suggested earlier, I decided to try running RegClean first. It fixed the problem. Details regarding this Registry Cleaner can be obtained at: http://createwindow.com/wininfo/regclean.htm

You get the following error message:

``The following system files have been replaced with older versions by a program you recently ran. These files are currently in use and cannot be automatically repaired.
``Windows may not run correctly until you exit and restart Windows so these files can be automatically repaired.
``C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DDEML.DLL''

Many users have run into problems after installing applications on their PC’s. Although I have not determined the precise cause, I believe I have found the solution.

1. Run REGEDIT utility by choosing START>RUN and typing REGEDIT in the dialog box.

Look for this string:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\CheckVerDLLs

2. Find the entry for ddeml.dll.
3. Right-click on ddeml.dll and chose delete.
4. Close the Registry editor and reboot.

My personal machine was reporting the error, after completing the steps above, I no longer received the message. Most importantly, my system is stable and all my critical programs are running without any trouble.
Please let me know if this solution works for you.

You might also try this:

Start Menu/Programs/Accessories/System tools

System Information/Tools/System File Checker

(then click on) Extract One File From Installation Disc

Specify: Ddeml.dll

Restore From: Your Windows 98 CD or C:\Win98(your system backup in your hard drive)

Save File In: C:\Windows\System

Hope This Helps..............Gene
