I have problem with my friend computer. There is Win98. If I turn on computer its boot since win screen appears and it’s everything what happened. Then I discovered that 2 files are incorrect: dblbuff.sys, ifshlp.sys.
Then I tried to do scandisk but it fount error and can’t fix these files. OK, then I tried to format my hard drive. I boot and it checks’s everything but when I do format c then it say's „Insufficient memory”.
If somebody knows what I must do then I am one big ear.

Hi

Sounds similar to
A similar but not the same problem

If you complete the steps in my response above at #5 you won't harm the computer but you may (or not) be able to get 98 up and running saving a lengthy install.

In the link above you will see memtest86. It is important to make sure your system memory is ok before doing much (using dos or windows) when you are experiencing a new problem with a computer. From the memtest site you can download a program that will create a bootable floppy or you can get the iso file for burning a bootable cd (if you can boot from your cd rom device.)

The next thing which is done when experiencing a problem which might involve the hard drive is to download and run the diagnostic for that drive. (Generally available at the manufactures website.)

With the memory and the hard drive in the clear - you can procede to work from a few different angles.

You could try and recover the old install so you don't have to bother making sure you have all the correct drivers. (and any data which hasn't been backed up)

Or - you could simply format the c drive. If you use the /U swith you should have no problems formating the drive. U stands for Unconditional

format c: /U

A similar problem indeed.

If you are attempting to format with the ' /s' switch, you may receive that memory error.

It isn't necessary to make the HDD bootable, specially if an OS is to be installed later - although if needed you can add the system files with the usual

sys c:

from the appropriate bootdisk

I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime

Hi

ONLY as mentioned earlier. There is no easier way that I know of.

You have the installation cd. Is it 98se? Anyhow select to boot the cd with cd rom support.

You should get a screen with a dos prompt >

Type the following and not what is in [...]

sys c:

d: [or e: or f: or whatever letter is assigned to your cd rom]

cd win98
dir win.* /s [there is a space between * and / ]

end typing.

Now hopefully you have a win.cnf listed above. According to Derek in 98se this file is a renamed win.com file.

See # 2 - Derek

Now all you need is a msdos.sys file. I'll have a look on the net to see if the 98 and 98se versions differ. If no one else sends you a copy I can send you the text of what is supposed to be in msdos.sys.

Hi

I have emailed some files to you. Hope you get them.

I had a look at my win98se disk and win.cnf was in a cab file (actually found it in win98_21.cab; win98_22.cab; win98_23.cab) So you would need to use the extract command or use a unzip progrom to extract out that file.

So ignore my last response basically.

The msdos file can be created by opening a text editor and cutting and pasting from a msdos.sys listing. Here is one listed at Microsoft in the shaded area.

Another interesting page

This page suggests that winboot.ini will override the msdos.sys file during the 98 boot up routine. So It would be an idea to see if there is a winboot.ini file, especially if the machine still refuses to boot properly.
