How can I transfer data between computers without a network card? (I'm using Windows 98 with one of them).

I'm trying to transfer data from my old PC to my new Dell laptop. I have ethernet cards for both computers so is it possible to do direct connection transfers with a RJ45 cable? Also, what steps would be involved in actually executing the data transfer?
