Comment:

"data error reading drive C", this is the message that I get after booting with the floppy and trying to do anything with C. I started out trying to format C but this is the message I keep getting. I have tried sys c:,fdisk, scandisk. Scandisk did run but stopped saying,"scandisk encountered a data error while reading root directory entry number 0 This error prevents scandisk from fixing the drive. Is this fixable?

well the error can mean a bad cluster on the hdd or a virus or a corupted fat.Can you run a virus scan on it or go into the bios and have it detected there.

ok....You didn't say why the fomat but it looks like a virus.I had sir cam wiped out hdd by taking it off line.I had to go into bios(delete key on boot) and have it reconized again by setting it to auto detect. Then you can put in your boot disk and go from there.

Sorry about all those duplicates. I don't know what happened I certainly didn't type each one.
ANYWAY ok I am going to go see if I can figure out what you told me to do. I am trying to reformat so I can put win98 back on it. It was given to me in a mess so I guess I can't say it was free.

ok, I don't see anything on delete key on boot.
It is set on auto detect though.
This is the first time I have ever done anything with bios so I don't know much about it.

If this hard drive has any partitions, you need to delete them first and then create a partition.

With your concerns about a virus and bad spots you might want to download a zero-fill program from the HD manufacturer's site. Boot from a floppy and run the software. This will write zeros to your HD thereby erasing all software and existing partitions. Then run fdisk, choosing option 1 on each page. Then format.
