.dat files are internal computer files. You do not need to read them. But you can try to use QuickView.

If not, copy the .dat file to a spare folder and change the extension to .txt which can often reveal useful info among the garbage.

In general, they are data files, very often in ASCII. They are used by many different software packages (wotsit.com lists 5 pages with over 10 per page).

Dat files can be several things. As bwbarbieri mentioned they can be ascii files or data files for your computer. they are also Word Perfect merge files and sometimes MPEG movie files use the dat extention.

They often arrive via Outlook email in "rich text" format. These can not be read by everyone's email. If this is the case then ask the sender to resend it in "Plain text" format.

The important *.dat files are in the Windows directory but are hidden:
attrib *.dat -s -h -r
Then you can see them: dir *.dat
