hi all, i was trying to install some files and other documents from a cd-r that i burnt on my celeron, onto my 486 dx4/100 system that also runs windows 98. However, the cd drive in the 486 refuses to read the burnt disc, although it has no problems reading any other cds. at first i thought perhaps the old drive couldn't read the burnt cd's as they were burnt at or above 4x, so i burnt the cd again at 1x, and still no go. Put the burnt cd in the celeron and it works fine. I updated the driver for the cd drive but it made no difference. so what's causing the problem? Is there any settings i should check etc? i do have other drives i could try in it but would like to see if i can get this one working. thanks in advance!

In general cdroms below 4x won't read cd-r's. There are exceptions--I have a 2x that will read them and a 40x that won't. But I'm sure that's your problem. I stopped using those drives in computers I built for that reason.
If you're going to keep the 486, your best bet is to find a new cdrom on sale.
