Hi! earlier i left this message,

Greetings All! I messed up my laptop! I just bought a thinkpad 560 model #264010u from ebay. Since the previous owner just went through and deleted everything, i went to dos prompt and typed format C: now i put in boot disk and it will not find the pcmcia as the thinkpad has an external cd rom. i found the driver at ibm, i think? can anyone tell me what procedure i have to do to get this to find the cd rom? the address for the drive is here---http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-4DXQKX.html?up=%25%25q7X9J7ZCXQ7rNb7EvJu&ut=loginCount%3D24%26productCount%3D1%26lastLoginDate%3D2000-11-04-21.13.18.246944%26type1%3D2640%26userID%3D%26greeting%3DWelcome%2Bback%252C%2BMr.%2BBleecker%26brand%3DIBM%2BThinkPad%26family%3DThinkPad%2B560%26model1%3D10U&selectarea=2640-10U&brand=IBM+ThinkPad%7CThinkPad+560%7C2640%7C10U
Please Help! Thanks.

another user writes back, Thanks!

What you need to do is format the drive and sys it. Manually create an autoexec.bat and config.sys file. Then follow the step outlined below.
1. Download devbaycd.exe to your hard drive.
2. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and add the following line:
device=x:\devbaycd.exe /p:320 /d:ibmcd001

where x: is the location of where you downloaded the driver to.
For example, device=c:\devbaycd.exe /p:320 /d:ibmcd001 would indicate that the driver was downloaded to the root directory of the C drive.
3. Save the changes and close the CONFIG.SYS file.
4. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add the following line
x:\mscdex.exe /d:ibmcd001

where x: is the location of the MSCDEX.exe file.
For example, the line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file may read C:\mscdex.exe /d:ibmcd001 , assuming MSCDEX is in your root directory.
5. Save the changes and close the AUTOEXEC.BAT
6. Restart the system for the changes to take affect.
Once you are able to access the installation CD for windows you will need to copy all the files at the root of the win9x (X=5 or 8 dependiing on what version of Windows you are installing)to a directory on the hard drive. Once all the files are copied rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys and reboot the unit. go to the directory you copied the installation files to and type setup.

I am not sure how to create an autoexec.bat or config.sys. and how do i start? do i put in win98 boot disk and start and then ..Thanks! for your help.

Have you tried a boot disk from www.bootdisk.com? It creates all the files for you.
