I have some file on my computer (.bmp) I downloaded from KaZaa. It won't let me rename or delete the file. it says "Name is too long" but this happens even if i type a name like "hi." Its not a "read only" file - any ideas?
I did try the tips other posters had suggested - going to mcafee.com, deleting through dos.
I'm not sure how to delete a file through dos.
Any one else have any help/ideas?
Thanks!

My great uncle cecil had the same problem, back in the fledgling days of the internet.
He solved the problem neatly because he kept his data files on a SEPARATE Partition from his OS.
One day he was misdirected to a site of ill repute which uncle became mesmerized with and he was tricked into downloading some pictures from. Well uncle knew that auntie would not approve so he then attempted to delete the files. To his surprise, the files would not delete. Well uncle thought, I'll use something a little more potent, I'll wipe and delete them. Well, to uncle's consternation, those wiley files still would not delete!!
Thinking fast, uncle fired up partition magic, (it was faster than using DOS), and reformated his data partition and then copied back his data which he had wisely backed up to cd-r. (Uncle was way ahead of his time)
Uncle has since become a great proponent of partitioning software and never misses an opportunity to espouse all its uses and advantages.
Good luck son, hope you manage to cover your tracks before you get busted.WC

Delete it from safe mode.
----------------or in dos at the prompt...
del c:\foldername\ms-dos name
example= del c:\pictures\photo~.bmp
hit enter. To find the ms-dos name right click the file then select properties. It should show an ms-dos name. Write that down.

To get to dos mode click start--shutdown--restart in ms-dos mode--ok. When you're done type exit or win and press enter to start back to windows or do a ctrl + alt + del.

right click on the file and see if it has READ ONLY checked, if it does, uncheck it. try deleting it then, if no luck then do it in DOS Command prompt. If its still there when you reboot, then you probably have a command in you win.ini, sys.ini or autoexec.bat that creates it at startup

Get yourself Evidence Eliminator!! Will delete anything u want and do it permanently! No traces left behind. Get evaluation version from

Winston.... your great uncle Cecil sounds cool! Did auntie ever catch him?!

If you try deleting from DOS, use deltree/y C:\path\filename.bmp instead of just the del command. This will ignore any attrib's set on the file. The /y is a confirm switch, bypasses prompting you to make sure you want to delete.

Better yet, butter the puss.
Or shock it.
Or stir-fry it.
And best of all, calculate the puss.
