COULD NOT INITIALIZE GRAPHICS SYS

I tried to run the program "Age of Empires" on Windows 95 and got the error message:

"Could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible with Direct Draw."

What does this mean? Age of Empires has been working fine for the past month? Thanks.
