If the monitor is not DDC complient then it needs to be defined in some way as to it's capabilities. This is done with an .inf file, but people often mistakenly refer to it as a "driver". It is not really a driver, it is just a properly formatted text file which enters the monitors mode profiles (either in specific modes or as a range of parameters) into the Windows registry. If the monitor make/model isn't listed in Windows as one of the hundreds of monitors which are in the internal database (found in Windows/Inf/monitor.inf - monitr11.inf), and if none of the "Standard Monitor Types" works, then you have to either 1) go through all the existing monitors in the database and find one which has the same specifications as your monitor and then select it from the hardware configuration dialogue, or 2) using the specifications provided by your monitor's manual, write your own .inf file and put it in the database. You can do a web search on the make/model and maybe find a .inf file for your monitor somebody else has already written.
