Hi, You don't have to get into Windoze to reload the CD. You would need the boot disk that you were asked to create when 98 was first loaded. Borrow one or down load one. MAD BOOT will do. Once it is booted into DOS go to your CD drive, usually one letter above normal and noted on the screen at DOS boot, and run SETUP (E:>Setup or whatever your CD drive is now named). The reload will retain all your progs and data. NO FORMAT!

Good Luck, Jim

It's a recovery CD, not an M$ installation CD

They are different

What are you trying to do? Some of those CDs work by erasing the drive, which may not be desirable, depending

It's more helpful if you can quote error messages exactly, and what exactly you are attempting when they are generated

I have seen the work of a trojan that deletes the contents of the windows folder. Running scandisk can recover the contents including the files you saved on the desktop. You can then use the xcopy command to put the files back into the windows folder.

I would definately not use a recovery CD before retrieving your files.

Allow me to begin with Thank you so very much for your help.

Here goes..I don't know how to get to the desktop folders to copy them. And I can't copy to cd in dos mode.

i tried the scandisk,I receive error code note enuff conventional memory, load emm386 devicehigh.

What I'm trying to do here is load windows.
Copy most if not all of my business documents to cd plus copy all of my favorites and things of that nature. I've had this comp for more than 5 years. Using it for business. (What a dork huh?)?

Once I copy all of this info, I plan on using my wipedrive software and than install Win2000.

Problem:
When I turn on computer without disk I receive a message immediately 'scanreg' prompts #1-5 regardless to which one I pick. I receive error c:\windows\isfhlp.sys
and c:\windows\himem.sys is missing or corrupt. Other times I recieve error Win.com missing or corrupt.

When I start with win98 bootdisk, it loads all information, ask if with or without cd and to prompt a:\>

I've tried to use the system recovery disk but to no avail. error code (-1) 9 back to prompt A:\>
With the application disk theres soooo many files, I just don't have a clue. It doesn't run automatically amd setup is bad command or file name.

Question:
When I try to start windows, Where is it loading from and how can I get there to change and or manipulate the information?

If I'm shooting in the dark here, please stir me in the right direction.

I'm using someone elses computer so it may take a couple hours before I can check back in. However, thanks again for all of your input.
Dee

First, if your documents aren't backed up, to removable media. I won't even go there.... ;-) And this is the only place, they're at. As what you've said they are, the documents, I think I'd slave the hard drive, in another computer and get them backed up pronto. Just make sure that the computer it's installed to, has some virus protection. Always a good idea. Can possibly get things going, with no problems. But, and I'll repeat that but, Would You want to take a chance of loosing something, of that nature.

Just an opinion, based on your post/response.

Good Luck,

I'm trying to take all precautions...Removing a device and inserting in another seems a bit scary for me.

Do you think I should solicit profe$$ional help? I just hate to fork out cash that I don't have when I'm sure I could troubleshoot this dang thing.

If you are too unsure of your own technical abilities to take out a hard drive and install it in another computer, I would recommend you seek the assistance of a professional. I would offer my services, except I am on the east coast, probably of a different continent.

Have you looked to see if there is any files contained within the windows folder?
'cd c:\windows' [enter]
'dir' [enter]
This should output several screens full of files and directories. If it does not, you will need to try running scandisk like I suggested earlier. Since it did not work when booting from the hard disk, try booting from the floppy boot disk. Then type;
'scandisk c:' [enter]

So far, you have told us enough that we might be able to tell you that your computer is broken. If you don't want to spend the money on professional assistance, you might have to collar a friend with a bit more technical ability to assist you.

"Here goes..I don't know how to get to the desktop folders to copy them. And I can't copy to cd in dos mode."

First, I thought when you said "desktop", I took that to mean the computer in general, and not just the desktop (folder). And I still think that. If I'm wrong, please correct me, thanks. You said this is a computer, you use for a "business". And it's the one, you've used for five years. If you don't, have the files (documents) backed up that are on this computer, to removable media. I, was trying to be on the safe side of things. Didn't want you to loose something, of that nature, understand. If these files, aren't as important, as you make them appear to be... then by all means; "I just hate to fork out cash that I don't have when I'm sure I could troubleshoot this dang thing."

What do you have for a boot disk?? Was it made with this computer, or downloaded?? (BootDisk.Com) Have you tried, replacing the system files, with the boot disk?? What was the exact error, about 'scanreg'?? At anytime, did you try to boot to safe mode?? What was done, just prior, to this problem?? (software install, hardware install, ect-ect.) Are you, do you know your way around, in DOS?? By that, can you, do you think you could perform (follow) some steps, with instuctions. By the way, you can burn cds in DOS. Just an opinion, mind you... :-)

I was talking about teens, because of what was said by Rimfire, and had nothing to do about yourself, ok.

Later,
CrazyOne
