I am having trouble copying my c drive to the d drive. I can't do it while in windows because some of the files are in use. I don't know enough dos to be able to copy the entire contents. Everything I've tried copies only the files in C:\ and not the folders. I've tried copy and xcopy and neither one worked. Can anyone help me out?
Bark!

'In use' or not, it should make no difference - unless you really are attempting a 'move' operation
All sorts of cloning solutions - - believe it or not, others have needed to do this is as well
Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real.

Try using xxcopy. (freeware)

If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

rather than copying the files, a better option would be to clone the partition concerned using disk imaging software
try http://www.partition-saving.com/
there is a very powerful tool called savepart.exe
all necessary instructions are available for download along with the program files
to run it you have to start the machine in command prompt. also the operation is greatly speeded up if you load smartdrv.exe before running savepart.exemy signature does not look like this

Err...just for info, which one worked great?
I kinda assumed you meant that at #6.DerekW

I have used 2 methods to copy a hard drive
xcopy has worked a few times but some compplain that it can faile or do an incoplete job or that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
Ghost.exe ver 5 was supplied with my wife's epox mother board. it works unelss there is a problem on that source drive/.Filecopy.exe is part of many diskmanager floppies. If you bought a reatail drive or downoada copyb of diskmanager from a hard drive manufacturer's site you will have a free legal copy.
it must be run from within windows to maintain long file names.
it works better than Ghost on a system with a flawed drive. less likely to choke.
be sure the new drive boots properly.
best to use the two ide ports and not fiddle with jumpers, etc on the drives, you need
no cd drive. once in a while filecopy does not work as expected
disable your anto-virus first.
try AVG free anti-virus ( press esc to shut off)
