Pls note that you CANNOT copy Audio CD songs onto your hard disk. When you copy it, windows explorer just makes a link to that file. But the link arrow isn't visible as it is programmed to be like that. And futhermore, it is ILLEGAL to copy Audio CDs unless you have the permission from the record company

Lay of the "ILLEGAL" crap... do you think yelling is going to stop people... and furthermore, it seems to me that this person already owns the CD... he\she just feels like listening to the songs without the CD.

you can find software on the net that will allow you to convert songs to .wav files and better yet, .mp3's. Then you could just play the songs using winamp or something, without using the cd player.

try

http://www.musicmatch.com

they have a free player that's very nice... you can buy a better version if you'd like... it'll take the tracks off your CD and convert them to wavs or mp3s... and something else too, I think.

if you haven't got any software just use windows sound recorder.
Just play the CD and recor it to wav.
Make sure that you have told the sound card to record from cd audio

a regular song will record approximately 30-40 megabytes worth of data (that's pretty big), so you'll probably just want to convert to mp3's.

mp3's are only 3 to 4 megabytes compared to 30 or 40 for wav's.

Try a piece of software called audiograbber. It extracts the music of the CD digitally rather that going through your sound card which results in better quality. It will then even convert it to mp3 for you if you want.

Look for a type of software called a "ripper" (you can usually find some shareware versions out there) They will put tracks of the CD and place them on your HD in .wav format. Considering the average size of a .wav file, I would convert it to a .mp3 (I use WinAmp or RightClick MP3)
By the way, it is not illegal to copy music to your HD or to another CD or to tape or anything else as long as you own the original CD and are not going to resell it or otherwise distribute it. When you buy a CD, you buy the licence to use the music in any format you choose just as long as you are not pirateing it.

Use the following software: Audiograbber (audiograbber.com) to rip fron the CD to your HD, Xing mp3 Encoder (xingtech.com)to convert to mp3 format this encoder is fast and as indicated above compresses 11:1, Jet-Audio (cowon.com/engdefault.htm)to play back and organize - works like a hi-fi.
I have execellent results with this combination.
By the way, copyright laws differ from country to country but in general if you own it use it yourself in any damn format.

So far I remember, when I had win 95, I copied songs successfully from cd drive to hard disk. I think this option is not available in win 98 because of copy right law.
