I just noticed that my cookies don't store in the Windows/Cookies folder. I found them in an old Earthlink/Users folder, under Programs, apparently left over from when I uninstalled Earthlink after a 30 day trial sometime last year. It won't let me delete the Earthlink folder because it says it's a system file. How do I get rid of this and fix it so the cookies will store in the Windows folder again? Is there a way to get rid of the remaining Earthlink files? I tried reinstalling Internet Explorer because I did have Netscape with Earthlink and thought maybe Netscape had changed something (Netscape has been uninstalled also and I don't have any files I can find that belonged to Netscape). I also found some Mozilla folders, don't know if those were part of Earthlink/Netscape, but I never installed the Mozilla browser. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it!

You can pretty well always delete stuff if you "shut down" to DOS.

Assuming your Earthlink stuff is in:
"c:\program files\Earthlink\Users" you type:

deltree c:\progra~1\earthl~1\users

Note that you have to use short (8 character) folder/file names. Before you do this right click the appropriate folder(s) from Windows Explorer and look for the DOS names - I've just guessed.

Make sure you are certain you have the paths correct before you use the DOS deltree command because there is no going back (no recycle bin).

Come back if you want any more info or wish to confirm anything before you go ahead.

It appears that Earthlink might have created their own cookies folder and then modified the Registry to change the default cookie folder to it. If you feel comfortable modifying the Registry, I guess you could do a search for 'Earthlink]sookies' and if you find any, change them to 'c:\windows'. But, if everything is working ok, you might consider leaving well enough alone.

Since you've dumped Earthlink, if you follow Derek's advice, I would go one step farther back in the deletion:

deltree c:\progra~1\earthl~1

Try this; got into the Regsirty at these locations below and if Earthlink is in the cookie paths for any of these keys you can change it back to or to wherever you like.

Hkey_Current_User
.+ Software
..+ Microsoft
...+ Windows
....+ CurrentVersion
.....+ explorer
......- Shell Folders
......+ User Shell Folders

and also at :

Hkey_Current_User
.+ Software
..+ Microsoft
...+ Windows
....+ CurrentVersion
.....+ ProfileReconciliation
.......- Cookies ->

And there's more...

Hkey_Local_Machine
.+ Software
..+ Microsoft
...+ Windows
....+ Internet Settings
.....+ 5.0 [or whatever]
......+ Cache
.......+ Special Paths
........- Cookies ->

All paths should be changed together to get it working correctly and a reboot may be required. You can also change the TIF and History paths [and also rename them] from these general locations if you look around abit...if that is your thing [it is my thing to change things]

The Earthlink folder can then be killed assuming it is using these regkeys.

an easy way to get the cookiews folder from "c:\program files\Earthlink\Users" is in Windows Explorer, locate the cookies folder, right click-hold down and drag/drop on C:\Windows - select "Move Here" from the popup menu.

Windows will automatically adjust the relevant registry pointers and job finished.

Other folders that Windows automatically adjust internal settings to are the "My Documents" "History" "Temporary Internet Files" "My Pictures" My Music" (last 2 only when you have these folders)

try a simple test using My Documents...

I've already tried just moving the file as suggested by chappie. It won't let me move or change anything because it says it's a system folder. If I use Derek's suggestion (looks the shortest and easiest) and delete the folder completely, will Windows automatically change the registry to point the cookies back to the Windows Cookie folder? I've only changed the register one time so I'm not real familiar with that whole process. Step by step instructions would be appreciated so I don't screw anything up. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone! I used Ronnie Ratt's advice and went through the register and finally killed Earthlink. Amazing the way regular Windows uninstalling leaves all of that on the computer. What alot of clutter. I noticed other things there that were left behind from programs I've removed in the past, but didn't touch anything but the Earthlink and Netscape stuff. I did a search and found several other paths to the Earthlink files, not just in the ones shown above. Once I deleted or changed all of them, and restarted my computer, it let me delete the rest of the Earthlink folders left behind. I don't know if it will make any difference in my computer's performance, but it makes me feel better knowing some extra junk is gone. I agree with Ronnie, I like to change things! Thanks again to all and I'm sure I'll be back now that I found this great help site!
