Since having some computer issues which are now resolved - just - I have been unable to log on to my bank's website and another website. For my bank, I hear their 'click' but the screen does not change. In the bottom bar it says javascript:check_browser(); Is that normal? What does it mean? lol Secondly, on the other site, it claims that my cookies aren't enabled. I have done everything suggested by them and by this site under a search under cookies. I tried turning off my firewall (briefly). I installed Java from Sun (one suggestion). Even found myself typing DOS comands (from past advice here). Any other suggestions? Weird since in order to register here, it said to have cookies enabled and I registered fine.

Without having more information first go to IE Help, About to see if you have 128 bit Cipher Strength that your bank requires.

You may need to delete your current cookie for the "other site" with IE closed go to Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files if that is where your TIF folder is located. Delete the cookie in question. It will also remove it from the Cookies folder. Then try to log back in to the "other site".

Now, explain what your resolved problem was as it relates to your new problem.

It means your javascript is disabled. You can visit my javascript page to learn how to reenable it:

How to enable/disable Javascript "on the fly" in major browsers

For your second question, if you use IE's default (as suggested above to reenable javascript) you will be ok, otherwise go in Tools -> Internet Options -> Security and set accept stored cookies (6th or 7th line of options). Should go well after that.

Thanks so much for looking over my problem. Will try the java thing you suggested - about enabling it using your site. The 'other site' (it seemed very mysterious seeing the phrase typed by someone else lol) is just a local free ads thing by the way !!!!! Anyway, the previous problem related to my trying to install an update of Norton Anti-virus - I had the old version I had installed in 2000 but figured it was time to break the bank and upgrade. Problem was that despite doing everything I was told eg. doing a defragment thing and so on and deleting old version, it would not install and then when I managed to get it to (don't ask me how) it do actually seem to be there and my computer was the slowest ever and so I uninstalled it deciding that I didn't have enough room. At the same time, my digital cable box (through which I get my broad band) went 'bang' and I got a new one. Since thence doth all my woes proceed.

PS - I've deleted all my temporary internet files and all my old cookies... accept cookies is set to 'accept all'. Did I do a bad thing deleting things?

No danger deleting Temporary Internet Files whatever method you use. Windows always restores any necessary hidden files on reboot.
