Ok, I just bought a laptop that didn't come with a CD-ROM drive, but I do have a floppy drive. I just obtained a copy of Win98SE on CD and now I am wondering how to get it onto my precious laptop, which remember does not have a CD drive. Is it possible to convert it to all floppies and then install from there???? I'm dying here...please help!

not win98, cab files are to large for floppies, you could do this with win95 though
you would have to format the floppies to 1.7 mb then you could put the cab files onto the floppies......then copy them to HDD

I've tried to format floppies to 1.7 MB using the format/t:XX /n:XX and the format/f:1.7 commands without success. (I was trying to repair original Win95 disks.)
What did I miss, or not know, to format to this size?
Dan

Try Winimage, it'll format floppies to the larger size. Or use a zip drive on the laptop's parallel port to copy windows in segments.

heres a program I used, worked well its sharware but you get 30 days to use it
after your done with it you can uninstall it

Might try a shredder program that generates a small batch file that rejoins file shreds when activated without need for the shredder program to be installed. You wont be able to run setup from floppies anyway. All files have to be put on hardrive and setup run from there. Personally I'd as soon use shredder program than that screwy special format. Special format works, but makes the resultant floppies super fragile for corruption. I did it once and got tired of having to make couple new floppies every other use.
Does anybody remember? Seems there was a website mentioned here last summer/fall that told how to put w98 and w95b on floppies. Know there is still one that tells how to do w95, but not w98.

Louis,
Plan #1 For $100 now you can get a new EXTERNAL CDRW drive. You'll use it for W98SE install & backups/downloads/file storage. I just bought 70 Gigs (100 CDR's) for $10 at Circuit City. Nothing beats that!!Plan#2 Use direct cable connect (windows communications). Copy the whole CD to the lapdrive & run from there.
Plan#3 Make many Zipfiles, composed of 3 .CAB files each, off W98SE Cd. Use "Whitsoft File Splitter 4.5a" to load these large Zipfiles to 1.44MB floppies for reconstruction on Laptop.
Plan#4 Goto plan #1
Good luck. --Robby--

Well, I have not tried this, but you can download a program called maxdisk or maxidisk, I can't remember which. It will format flopies to 1.7megs. Then try the following:
for Wins98a:
+---disk1 |
| DRIVER21.CAB
| MINI.CAB
+---disk2
| BASE4.CAB
| BASE6.CAB
| CATALOG3.CAB
| CHL99.CAB
| DRIVER11.CAB
|
+---disk2
| DRIVER21.CAB
| MINI.CAB
|
+---disk3
| NET10.CAB
| WIN98_22.CAB
| WIN98_69.CAB
|
+---disk4
| DELTEMP.COM
| DOSSETUP.BIN
| EXTRACT.exe
| FORMAT.COM
| INTL.TXT
| OEMSETUP.BIN
| OEMSETUP.exe
| SAVE32.COM
| SCANDISK.exe
| SCANDISK.PIF
| SCANPROG.exe
| SCANREG.exe
| SETUP.exe
| SETUP.TXT
| SETUP0.WAV
| SETUP1.WAV
| SETUP2.WAV
| SMARTDRV.exe
| SUBACK.BIN
| SUHELPER.BIN
| W98SETUP.BIN
| WB16OFF.exe
| XMSMMGR.exe
|
All other CAB's to floppies (1 Cab for 1 floppy)
