Is there any possibility to convert WAV files into MP3 files through Windows media player? I read about this in another forum..
If yes, how does it work?

Personal opinion here. Windows Media Player is wrought with security holes. To me this is a major factor in not using it. Plus it's a hog and restrictive. Whether it's 6.4 or 9.X. There are free programs out there that will do what you want. CDEX 1.51 is one;

Search Google for a freebie called dBpowerAMP. I used to use CDex until I found this. It's far better, just gives you "conversion" on the context menu when you right click the file. You can set it to put the converted file wherever you like.
