I am running Windows 98se. I was doing a defrag on my drive when my motherboard went on my comp and proceeded to screw up most of my files, programs, shortcuts and some icons on my desktop. The service tech backed up all my files, reformatted and reinstalled Windows. Upon getting the comp back and attempting to restore my files from backup I have found most of my files are now in a different format. Instead of showing the usual file folder icons it shows as a white window with what looks like the WINDOWS flag on it. I had a bunch of digital pictures (all my family pics) saved in a folder in My Documents and I am unable to access them or open the file now. How can I convert the file back to it's original state so I can view my pictures which were saved as jpeg's again and move them to a disk? When I try to open it I am given all kinds of options and have tried them all. Do I need a special program to convert them back or can I do this in my word processing program which does have a file conversion program. The problem is how do i find out what the original format of the file was? Please Help I want my pictures back. The rest of the stuff can be replaced from disks or downloading but not my family pictures (I had just gotten the burner installed previous to this happening and ran out of disks so I was unable to save any of them to disk)

Open your windows explorer and find the folder with the pics. Right click on a pic and use properties. This should tell ya what format the pic is in. Ususally it's a .jpeg. You can try renaming one to see what happens. Right click it and choose rename, and give it a .jpeg file extension. If it works, you'll have to rename them all. Use the help file in Win98 on file extensions to convert them back to their original form.

These files are corrupted, you probably can't get them back. Run scandisk on the drive to restore what you can, the rest are gone.

It's not a matter of converting. The files are just not associated to a program that normally opens them.
Possibly the program that you used to view the pistures with was not reinstalled.
If the file will not open when you double click it
Right click the file
Select 'Open with'
Select the appropriate program
Notice the 'Always use this program to open this file' option
Click OK

When i pulled the folder which contained the pictures out of the backup folder and put it back into My Docoments IT DOES NOT OPEN AS A FOLDER or SHOW ME THE CONTENTS. I need to CONVERT THE FOLDER back to its original state so I can access the pictures inside and see if they need to be converted back as well. It does not display as a folder at all. It has a logo on it now like mentioned in my previous e-mail. The backup was made by the technician after the system crashed and it seems to have saved all the screwed up files, folders and some programs in their screwed up state. Some folders I restored no problem while others like my family pics folder and My Briefcase or its contents did not restore properly from the backup. Instead of showing the Briefcase Icon it also has the white logo with what I beleive is a Windows flag on it.

I think your best bet would be to try to access the folder/directory in dos and copy the pictures to another directory. Do you know the path to the directory containing the pictures?

I think I know the path to the directory. I dragged it out of Windows where the technician who repaired my computer saved all my files in a folder called backup. I restored it back to My Documents\My Pictures\family pics which is on Drive C. How can I found out the correct path and how do I get easy access to Ms-dos to see if by chance I can access the folder(s) from there to try and rename them. When my motherboard crashed it was replaced, my drive was reformatted and windows 98se was reinstalled. I found that most of the files in my backup now have numbers on them instead of names. It's a real chore going threw all of the folders in the backup figuring out what to replace and what to get rid of (programs & games installed from disk etc) and then going threw them again to see which folder is okay and which folder or contents cant be opened. The folders that got hit the worst were the digital picture files I had saved in my documents/my pictures folder. I have 2 folders with pics that wont open or display at all, and in a 3rd folder it opened okay but I had about 4 pics that wont display. The rest of my personal folders that wont open were either on My Desktop, in My Documents or my Briefcase at the time of the crash all of which were and presently are on Drive C.

Without knowing the paths to the directories with the pictures it would be hard to advise you how to move them. Let me suggest this: Download a diffent viewer and see if it will see the pictures. You might try irfanview. You can get it at www.bootdisk.com. I use something called qpv and a slightly different version called qv. They are essentially dos based. The interesting thing is some files that qpv won't read, qv will. I think irfanview may contain a file repair that may help also.
