"MGI Video Wave" software has an Mpeg software conversion program. This is an Avi capture and editing software program. You can capture or import .avi files, edit them then "build" and save to mpeg, or mpg extension. (remember its software converting" so its not as good as a Hardware mpeg Decoder. .Dat is just another extension for Mpeg. (Mpeg1) not Mpeg2.

1st you don't need to convert it to dat to play it back on cd. Check out www.dashowcd.com 1hr 45 mins of 1/4 screen and 27 mins of 1/2 screen vid on 1 cd. It's all in the orignal quality, capture quality, and then compression settings.

Use Xing Mpeg Encoder and the once converted rename the .Mpg to .Dat

No no no no you've got it all wrong, get xing mpeg encoder or another it doesnt matter, then once you have the mpeg made then you have to burn it with nero or adaptec vcd creator which comes with the latest adaptec easy cd creator, then once you've burned it when you check it there will be folders on the cd and when you look in one of the folders with the main movie then it will be in .dat format
