I was working on microsoft word and need a site for a refrence. When i went to right click a picture the context menu would not appear. i tried it on every site including google and could not make the context menu appear. THe weird part about it i it appears on the desktop and in my folders just not on the internet. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the mouse but nothing changed. I have an optical mouse if that gives any clue. does any one know how i can get the context menu back.

fyi - context menus are derived from the application they're invoked from - reinstalling the mouse would have been a pointless exercise.

When you're "on the internet" you're using a browser (no doubt IE) - that would be the place to focus your attention (not sure what Word has to do with anything)

You could try to repair IE,

Control Panel>
add/remove>
IE(What ever version)>
add / remove>
A box will display giving you 3 choices, select repair.

Thanks for the advice but it still wont work. I just found out something interesting though from my brother and that is that he told me the computer said he needed an upgraded mshtml.dll file from the 4.0 we had so he found one recommended by computing.net and got version 6. I dont know if it has anything to do with the internet but i have IE5.5 if that will help any.

Mshtml.dll is HTML Viewer. Can't see any reason to link it with your problem. When you run IE Repair it is liable to report any number of files that might be outdated. If it didn't report anything like that when you ran it I think you can forget it.

On the vague offchance that this is some registry screw-up you could Shut Down and Restart in MS-DOS and type scanreg /fix (hit Return key). This will rebuild your current registry and is harmless. Often fixes general problems but none too confident about this one. Type exit (Return) to restart Windows.

Has this problem suddenly arrived? If it was recent you could try scanreg /restore (same procedure as given) and choose a registry dated just before the problem came along.

Thanks derek for your advice but still no go. Do you think it has something to do with my registry. I have not touched my registry or put anything new on my computer except for the mshtml.dll file in months.

I have come to the conclusion that it has to do with internet explorer. Does anyone know how to remove ie5.5 from win98. i go to remove programs and it only says to repair or to add component. does anyone know how.

Really? (wish I'd thought of that)

YEs jboy I know you said it could be IE5.5 but with no answer how to fix it. It is not like I was trying to ignore your post but I wanted to try all my options before going with that one. Also if you know how to uninstall IE5.5 so I can re-install it then that would be helpful.

That wasn't a 'guess'

The only uncertainty was if IE was the browser you were using - you seem to be unaware that context menus are available in (and quite specific to) most applications.

Maybe you should reinstall the mouse again.

I never accused you of guessing and I am well aware that context menus are in most applications and knowing that I have stated that the mouse works in Word and other applications. And like I have said in the other posts I have already re-installed the mouse and it was a no go. Now if you do not have an answer or do not wish to help then that is your choice. I am not only asking you. So back to my question does anyone know how to uninstall IE 5.5 because the add and remove programs in control panel will not let me.

I see you are running win 98, if you go to Microsoft you can download IE6, it should detect IE5.5 and remove or disable it.
BTW did you have a look to see what you have available in add components?

I tried to check the ad components but i do not have the original cd disk for 5.5. so it wont let me check what can be added. Thanks for the tip I'll try it out as soon as I can.
