constant lock up?!?!

My computer is constantly locking up (every 5 or 10 minutes at least. Scan disk never automatically runs after I reset, which it used to do, and when I manually run it, it never finishes before the computer locks up again. I've ran virus scan, regclean, defragged the hard drive, checked for spyware, nothing has solved the problem. Little help?

How many programs are loading on startup? How many icons are next to the clock? Does it lock up in safe mode? Any hardware conflicts?

5 programs from start-up, 3 icons next to the clock. It only locks in safe mode during scandisk and no hardware conflicts. Hope this helps.

this problem has been going on for a week now. Only thing new is getting cable internet about 3 weeks ago. But I didn't need to install an ethernet card or anything because I had cable internet before (last year).

Boot from a floppy and run scandisk. If it fails the same way, that would indicate a possible hardware problem.
